I am going to barry university this fall for the one year program and I was just wondering if anyone else is? Or if anyone had any knowledge if it is a good program?🙂

i looked into it but did not apply. i did not care for the program much.

ive been accepted and will likely attend in the fall. Im from NY though, and havent had the chance to visit the school-so im wondering how the surrounding areas are--if its dangerous, etc...

How long did it take to get accepted to Barry after you sent off all your information? I am thinking of applying either of the fall or spring but have not decided yet

I have also been accepted to Barry. The program director informed me this morning. I am from Madison, in Wisconsin, however and I have no idea what the environment is like in Miami Shores. By looking at their website, they did mention that they have housing available for their masters students at a hotel turned dorm. The rent was pretty steep however. It would be pretty nice to change the weather from minus 20 in the winter to 70. I'd love to talk to others who have been accepted into the one year program. We'd be taking Gross Anatomy. Pretty Exciting 🙂

I'm thinking about the Barry program for this fall as well.

What is your motivation in attending? How do you see the program enhancing admission to medical school?

Well LastSamurai, to be completely honest I don't know exactly the strengths of the program. Online, the one year program indicates the advanced classes that I will be taking including Gross Anatomy. It appears, from the website, that the classes are almost identical to medical school classes. However, what concerns me is that they only have a 77% success rate and that includes all the other programs that people will apply for and not just for the allopathic schools. So I'm not sure I can say with confidence that this program in particular will be successful in getting people accepted to medical school. What attracted me however, were the classes and the difficult pace which will indicate to the medical admissions committee that I am determined to succeed and attend medical school.

Cluj, thanks for your response. And congratualtions on your acceptance to the Barry program! I won't know until late summer but I hope to see you there.

I agree with your evaluation of the program thus far. For someone who has been slowly doing the postbac thing on and off for years, I have reached a crossroads. Although I technically have met the minimum science requirements for medical school, a master's would hopefully allow me to consolidate previous studies and ideally put to rest any concerns based on academic ability. I also agree that a singular strength of the Barry curriculum is its simulation of medical (versus biomedical) courses and its intensity (one year v. two in other programs, which also helps cost-wise).

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge of the program. Keep us posted!

One other thing about the Barry Program. The director of the program told me that the number of credits, which I am assuming is per semester, will total 18. Now keep in mind these are graduate credits, which translated into undergraduate means that they are approximately 22 credits. So, if the program is so intense I'm not sure if I'll have enough time to adequately prepare for the MCAT which I need to take early next spring. However, from all other standpoints the program itself seems pretty strong. I should get a packet from them in the next few weeks so I'll keep you posted on any other details about the program. Last Samurai, why is it that you won't find out until late summer about whether you got in or not? Since they started looking at my application, it only took about 3 weeks for them to decide. Hopefully you'll find out sooner, considering that classes start on August 22.

i just got word i got into the 1 year program..im currently waitlisted at NYU Dental school...but hopefully this will make my application more competitive for next year since my science grades werent that great in college ;(

look forward to meetin ya'll!!!!!!!

i will be attending the 1 year program this fall 2007. i'll prob head down there sometime in june/july to scope out a place to live. will there be anyone interested in rooming together to cut costs? i heard there were a few decent places right near the univ but after checking online....i saw that these places were pretty shady. not sure what to make of it...if its a person just pissed off and writing bad reviews, or if it really is legit. i have 2 friends already down there and they recommended greenwich park and portofino.

and in response to the 77% success rate of students getting into professional school....its 77% over the past 20 years or something like that. their more recent statistics from 2005 was 42/44 students being accepted to med/dental school. those are good enough stats for me!

i'll b there end of july to find a place..the apts near the school do seem kinna shady...i thnk i wanna get one kinna near ft lauderdale...but i just hope i get in after this program! i'm lookin for a roomate if your a female!!! lol

i'm a male. don't really care what gender i room with, my GF does, but she'll get over it, lol. just trying to cut costs, as long as the person is clean and respectable. there are numerous housing near barry. i'm not sure if i would want to commute more than 20 min in miami because i heard the traffic sucks. another, albeit more expensive alternative, is aventura, FL. that is about 15 min away from barry and nice residential areas around there.

anyone wanna room? PM me.

Is the Biomedical Science Program @ Barry on rolling admission?

it would nice to hear back since I am planning to apply in a couple of months.

yes, it's rolling admission. I just got accepted to Barry like an hour ago!!

yes its rolling admissions but back when i was accepted in april, the dean told me that there was a 60 person waitlist. which is bigger than the class itself. i'd imagine they are going though that waitlist quickly though because people are starting to make final decisions as to where they will end up next year. if i were you i wouldn't wait to apply. you can always recind your offer if you are accepted. it doesn't hurt to apply.

congrats! 👍

For those of you that sent in paper applications did you hear from them once they received your application ? I sent my application in about 2 weeks ago but haven't heard from them at all.

Just wanted to let you guys know I got the call last week that I was accepted for the fall. He told me to let him know as soon as possible if I will attend because they already have a waitlist of about 60 people. I will make one of those people very happy when I give up my seat on Tues.

I just got into the 2 year program at Barry, DAMN. I am waitlisted at EVMS, Midwestern ILL, and Tufts. Frustated....

you could always call and find the status of your application. the staff was really friendly. i know FAU BMS has committee meetings every few weeks so there is a delay there. As for Barry i think they check out apps as they roll in so it wouldn't be a bad idea call them. goodluck

i called NOVA Dental School today b/c I wanted to find out how many students from Barry they accept into their program. They said not too many b/c they would prefer for students doing post-bacc to go elsewhere...why is that? Im so confused- I really want to get into dental school for the Fall 2008 and I currently have a BS from tx a&m, an MS in Clinical Research from NYU College of Dentistry- and got waitlisted for this year at NYU...they told me to go back and better my science GPA (btw I have a 19AA/19TS on my DATs) so thats why I applied for the barry program...got any additional advice for me????

hi im currently in the barry 2 year program. i finished the first year already and only have 3 classes left after the summer ends. im also originally from miami and if anyone has any questions or concerns in regards to either the program, classes, teachers, good areas in which to live and so forth, feel free to message me.

Hello 😛,

I have also decided to do the BMS postbacc program mainly because I think it is a good way to make the transition to medical school. I thought of working full time and getting more clinical experience but I don't want to loose my studying habits 😴. I'm afraid that after a year of not so rigorous studying it will be harder to adapt to med school. Any one else agree? Best of luck to all of you, 👍

i just got accepted to the 1-year program. who's planning to go?

Hi,
I will be attending the 1yr program. I believe we will be taking classes in the morning, while the students in the 2yr program will be taking them in the evening. Can any one confirm this? Orientation will be on 8-22 and we'll be able to register for classes then. I currently live in Miami and just graduated from FIU. Any other FIU students attending? Anyone from Miami?

as far as the class schedule, i have read that somewhere also. either that or someone told me, i forgot. but i think the 1-year track, we will be taking classes all day. the 2 years track, those students start in the late afternoon or early evening.

the fall semester of the 1 year track we take like 6 courses. no way you could fit that in just the morning.

this is directly from their website:
*1 year track) Classes in this option are held during the day.
*2 year track) Classes in this option are held in the afternoons and evenings.

Yeah, the program has 36 credits which will be distributed like so:
Fall 14
Spring 16
Summer 6

I spoke to Dr.Laudan and he told me that the classes for the first semester are:
Biochem I
Histology with Lab
Gross Anatomy
Ethical Foundations
Health Care Delivery
I've heard from students in the program that the second semester is the toughest, they designed it this way to help ease students into the curriculum. I'm really excited about starting, it almost feels like starting med school!

I just submitted my application to Barry, I hope there is a spot left for me!!

for those of us dental ppl...i heard we can take a concepts of dentistry class that is goin to b taught by the dean from NOVA dental...is that true? can anybody confirm this???

drzaidds, that is true. i have heard it is an extremely easy class also. a lot of my friends that are dental are actually getting letters of recommendation from him either for nova's dental school or other schools.

Hey guys, I did the 2yr program at Barry so if you have any questions, let me know.

Did you apply after your first year or did you wait to apply to medical school after completion of the program? I got into the 2 yr program btw.

Didnt apply to medical. Applied to dental school. I know that the people applied to med school mostly after their first year of the program since they had something to show on their transcripts. Other did it after completing the program. Most did it after their first year...

Thanks. That was one of my concerns about not getting into the 1 year program.

pPKB - did you apply specifically to the 2 year program or was the 1 year your first choice? i applied a few weeks ago and i'm pretty sure I put the 1year as my intended program, but i cant remember if they also consider you for the 2 year program if they don't think you're cut out for the 1year program.

I don't recall if in the application they ask you which biomedical science program you want. However, I wanted the 1 yr. I believe they place you in a program according to your gpa and mcat. Since my mcat was low, they placed me into the 2 yr program to give me more time to study for retaking the mcat.

when you say low mcat.... how low?

i applied with a 3.4 (2.8 BCPM), 27Q

You should be fine for the 1 yr program. Barry requires MCAT of 24+ for the 1 yr, which I was just shy of. I know for gpa they require 3.0+, but I'm not sure how they calculate the BCPM into that. Btw, I had 3.4 as well, with 3.3 BCPM.

I am attending Barry for Fall 2008 for the 1 year program. When I spoke to the Dean while I was applying he said it took only 48 hours to hear back and I got accepted the day after I completed my application- very fast response. I was wondering if anyone is looking for a roommate with me and my boyfriend. I am very clean and responsible!!

Does anyone know if it is possible to work while doing this program and how long each day would be? And are you guys applying to dental/med schools now or after you graduate from the program?

It is extremely hard. I was working for a software firm averaging 60hrs/ week and doing the classes at night. Mind you I was in the 2yr program which isnt as intensive. If you choose to work, know that your not gonna be sleeping much...

i got notice this morning that i got into the 1 year program.

anyone looking for a roomie?

I just got the call not more than an hour ago that I got the last spot in the 1-yr program! I'm so excitied but i'm still waiting to hear back from a few other schools...we shall see what happens!

I am looking for a roomate. I just got accepted for Fall 2008. Let me know if you still need one or if you are interested.

hey guys,

I got into the Barry 18 mo program back in May. Shoulda used SDN earlier as a resource, but I need to find a roommate for anyone who is interested. If anyone [thats a guy] is interested please PM me or reply back. I am extremely NEAT, friendly, and studious.

Hope to hear from some1 soon!

I'll be your classmate in Option I!

Hey you all! I will also be attending the 1 year program at Barry in the fall. I'm currently living in Milwuakee (I think someone else mentioned they were from Madison, whats up Wisconsin buddy!). I
I'm pretty excited because this is an opportunity for me to show that I am academically capable of completing medical school, but Its also going to act as a quasi-test run of the 1st year of medical school, to see if its something I actually want to do.

Unfortunately, Im so busy that I havent been able to find a place to live, and probably won't even be able to get down there to look until the 15th of so of august, so im cutting it dangerously short. However, I grew up in Miami in the Miami Shores area, so I have a social network/connections already established there which should help me out. Still, if anyone is still looking for a place to live or a roommate I may be interested in living with somebody, especially if it will be conducive to studying for exams together and keeping each others heads in the game.

Send me a PM or feel free to give me a call 6147836207

Does this program give you Florida residency?

Does this program give you Florida residency?

no it will not. you need to show proof of having a job, property ownership, and/or paying taxes for a few years i believe. its not that easy to get residency in FL.
