I have a question..

I have applied to advance PM&R and TY years. I have interviews for PM&R but none for TY and now I am freaking out. Is it too late to apply to prelim med? I researched and found a bunch of programs that have deadlines of January 1st and I need to know if I am throwing my money away or should I apply this late. I really do not want to scramble! Please any help would be great.

If worse comes to worse and I have to scramble for prelim med will the PD of my PM&R program help me?

Go look on Freida and apply to the ones in your area if they're still taking applications.

Yes, do a prelim surgery year at NYHQ. Its WAY easier than any prelim medicine year I know. Not a transitional year, but the next best thing. One overnight call per month, never breaking 80 hours (70 some months, 36-60 on your ED month). The senior residents make damn sure you're out of the hospital by 7pm. Night float is great! Good luck.

i only applied to a prelim year at my school and did not match. however, i was able to scramble into a transitional spot at my school and the family practice residency at my school offered me a position as well. i would wait and scramble after the match because you know where you will be going for your pmr residency and there will be a lot of spots open from which you can choose.

I think that is the exception to the norm. Rarely does a prelim medicine spot fill while a transitional year spot at the same program doesn't match 😕. I think it is risky to rely on the scramble for your PGY-1 year....you could end up going to a very undesirable spot. :scared:

i guess from my experience with the scramble, it might not be possible to get an open transitional spot, but there are TONS of prelim, family, and surgery spots open at the scramle to satisfy the PGY 1 year. i guess it would be safer and wiser to apply to prelim years now; although my point to "Nervous Student" is to try to contact his/her own med school now, and if worse comes to worse, to be aware that it will be possible to scramble; and may even be advantageous...

Thanks for all the responses!! I am actually a USIMG so I don't have a school that I can contact for any help. I actually live right near NYHQ and I think they always go unfilled for surg so that might be a good idea. Is surg ok to do for PM&R?

Oh I have another question, how do you find out where there are prelim family prax PGY1 spots??

Yes a surgery prelim is just fine for PM&R.

I'm not sure if there are any family med prelim spots, it is usually a categorical program. I believe if you contact the family med programs that usually go unfilled and ask if they would consider you for that first year only that might be the way to go, but you might want to ask TRAMD since that is what he did. The only problem I can see with this situation is that if you did match into a Family Med program and transferred into PM&R after the first year, you would be funded only for your first 3 years of residency (based on the family medicine residency) and your PGY-4 year would have to get funded by the PM&R program/institution. This could become an issue and you may not get paid or be able to finish your last year of residency if your program doesn't pony up the money. Hopefully someone can chime in more about this situation. Good Luck...
