I'm just curious... Does it actually happen? Do you need to be failing all your classes and not meeting pre-req's or completing your degree; Or does this happen even if someone struggled through one (the last) semester of school with B's and C's? Just wondering if you guys have seen this happen before, referring only to academic reasons and not legal/criminal reasons.

It has happened before but is very rare. One of my buddy's classmate was let go because of poor performance (public school). Private schools are much more lenient. The school knows how much money they have invested in you and will try as much as possible to keep you afloat. However, I strongly believe that if you tried so hard to get into such a respectable profession, you are getting D's because you are simply lazy. In that case, you shouldn't be a dentist and put your future patients in the wrong hands.

Thank you very much for the advice. Just a question for you: How do you know private schools are much more lenient, if you don't mind me asking? Regarding my grades, I'm not getting "D's", the lowest grade I would expect to see would be a C or C+. It's in regards to personal/family reasons, not because of a lack of effort in order to perform well or lack of motivation to enter a profession. Thanks again!

If it's a low grade in one course it is understandable, and many schools will over look that as long as you either have an "upper trend" or a solid GPA in your core sciences. Again, schools look at each applicant individually and each case differs from another. In my situation, after receiving an acceptance, I finished my semester with a C- in histology due to personal reasons. I explained it to them in a follow-up letter and they didn't seem to care that much. All they said was "as long as that C or C- is not in one of the prerequisite science classes then you should be fine." Good luck with everything!

Thanks for the advice. I was actually under the impression that a C in a pre-requisite is acceptable, since that is the minimum requirement for those courses (at the school I'm going to). I'm not sure how this would vary honestly

You answered your question here

I guess my question is: If I get 2 C's (one in a pre-req, one non-pre req) due to personal situations, how would this fare out? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Almost had my acceptance revoked. I told them 5 times in my app that I wasn't going to finish my Masters until after I enrolled, but they missed that I guess, and said I had to finish the program before I enrolled. 18 grad credits in one semester and I ended up surviving that test.

As long as you got in! But has anyone actually had issues with a poor final semester, grade-wise? That's really where my concern lies.

...Anyone have experience or know someone that had an acceptance taken away for a poor academic semester prior to starting dental school?

Wait. I thought having a master's is not a prerequisite.

If you put that your doing something on your application, you have to do it. It doesn't matter if its a masters or just classes you thought you might be taking. Since they could have accepted you for that reason.

i put down some classes for this semester but never took them. Called my school and they said it was ok as long i have all pre-reqs done. It depends on the school.
