Anyone have experience applying to MD and PhD programs in the same cycle?

Curious how this looks to adcoms, or if they are the same for a given school. I have significant research experience at a highly ranked school, great LORs, and applied MD, where my stats are more or less average. I have no IIs thus far, but I want to do research in my career and am just exploring the possibility of applying for a PhD (apps due November/December) if this cycle does not pan out for me.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance!

Highly doubt they are the same as med school adcoms. I don't think they would have the time, or maybe even the expertise/interest to screen basic science applications. I'd go for it. I am going to apply to a few masters programs (not in the US) to create some additional options. That being said, if you really want to do research, an MD/PhD might have been better.

Generally a terrible idea. If you don't get into any MD programs this cycle then strengthen your app and try again. ONLY apply PhD if you are willing to have an entirely different training path and career.

The admissions committees for MD and PhD (and even MD/PhD) programs are separate. Once in a while we do get a LOR that was clearly written for PhD admissions, so if you do end up applying to multiple routes be careful.
