Hi Everybody (in my best Dr. Nick Voice). I was wondering if any of you have used EssayEdge, an online editing service. I really want to make an impression with my personal statement and i figure $300 worth of help might do me some good. Besides I dont write too good (33 M). Any feedback would be great. Thanks a bunch.

There's an extremely long list of folks on here who would be willing to edit your essay for you, free of charge. Also, ask around, friends, folks at your college, make friends with admision folks and have them help you out. When app. days come, you'll need that $300.

EssayEdge rocks! I used them and was very happy. It's not $300, it's only $70 if you want a review, not a rewrite.

Yes, you can get other people to read your statement for free but most of them don't have a clue about writing. Your buddy next to you in O Chem is probably no better than you are at writing.

$70 is not that much for a great personal statement. Suck it up and pay the money. I'm happy I did. I agree it's too expensive to use for all the secondaries, but you only have one AMCAS personal statement so go for it.

i used it too, and it was well worth the 70 bucks to me. they really fleshed out my essay and made it feel much more complete.

I plan on asking people on SDN to edit my essay but I also want to have it professionally edited. I'm thinking about ivyessay.com. Its definately cheaper than Essayedge.com but I don't know anyone that used this service. I'm not sure how good they are. Maybe some on this forum has used this service and could give us both some advice.

I used IvyEdge.com and thought their work was complete crap. I don't have any experience with these others, but good luck!

Hey all. I essayedged my essay and it was awesome. Really, they did a really good job. [tingly feeling after reading, yeah that happen]. Also, you can write back and forth with your editor. I got the premium service and also got a cheaper deal by putting in a coupon code on the payment screen. This is what you have to do. There are cutoff prices that they charge based on word count. So my word count was like 900 words a whooping 140$, but then I went to google and typed Essayedge coupon codes. and the first website had like a 25% discount on it, so i entered that promotional code in an got a really good deal. Basically, you enter the code when you are paying, it is at the top of the screen on the payment menu. Good luck

so what's the diff between rewrite and review.
i'm bad at writing, so if they review how is that gonna help me.
I would use it if you guys tell me they make your essay interesting.

people told me my essay is dry and i don't know how to make it better.

let me know.

I would be careful with having a service do too much to your essay...having a review of your essay would give you suggestions on where to improve it, and could give very specific suggestions of things to add, but you want to do the writing yourself. this is the same as people who use résumé and cover letter services...you don't want a cookie-cutter essay that will be easily recognizable as not being your own work. I've been doing hiring at my office over the last two months and have rejected several candidates based on letters obviously written by services (apparent since they actually use almost the same letter for every client they write for). I can only imagine med schools have enough experience to pick out the essays that come from services and I'm sure they don't look favorably on that...just my thoughts anyways...not to mention they'll have your secondaries to compare the essay to, and it will be rather apparent if the writing style is completely different.

Well, when I submitted my essay to essay edge I personally thought it was awesome. I had it checked over and all that. I got the rewrite service done, and they livened up my essay alot. They were able to transition better, make the story flow nicer. They made the imagary like a novel, you could picture it in your head. It was simple, yet subtly complex, they meshed my story with the reasoning to becoming a doctor alot better. If you want I can give you my pre, post, and submitted essays... BUt you have to remember, this is your essay, not thiers, so in the end I mixed and matched my essay to make a really good product.

This is true, but I would like to add that, if you mix and match your product you can avoid alot of these dissimilarities. It also depends on how strong of a writer you are. And what you are capable of doing... just my thoughts...

I totally agree...in fact, when i read your post, you actually said what i was fumbling around trying to say 😳

I was just warning against people who want a quick fix, and I think it's always dangerous to let someone else do your work for you. But, having them go over it and work on it, and then taking it back yourself and continuing to work on it I think is an excellent idea (so please don't sue me essayedge, i'm not trying to discourage your clients) 🙄

Anyone else just think these editing services are really unfair to those of us that spend hours and hours writing our OWN essays, like we're supposed to? Just wondering if I'm alone in this. 🙁

This sounds like the classic TesT Prep issue. Is it fair that others cant afford Test Prep centers and are therefore at a disadvantage. I understand your concern and its a legitimate one but we are applying to med school. I'm pulling out all the stops. I put plenty of hours into my Essay but am willing to bite the bullet and pay some editing service to polish it up. You and everyone else are welcome to do the same. best of luck to all.

I didn't have the money to spend on test prep, and I don't have the money to spend on editing services, so I guess I'll have to see if I can get into medical school based on my own merits. Yes, I know I sound bitter.

Look buddy, I'm in the same position as you but i busted my ass off and put in overtime so i can afford to make my essay shine. That is all i'm saying. So what if we have to work harder. It builds character. Just got suck it up and do what it takes to make it happen. Good luck.

EssayEdge is a scam :meanie:

I don't know about everyone else, but I dind't think Essayedge was that great. Anyone else feel the same way? I think the finished product was only marginally better than the product I turned in. Maybe it was the reviewer I got? Damn waste of #%$$ $140!!! Oh well...

I don't think you can compare test preps to essay writing services. I had a friend that used essayedge and he said it was a total waste of money. I wouldn't put the money into it if I can just get suggestions for free from peers, english professors, and people on this site.

As per getting ideas, just look through those books that you can get from barne's and nobles about writing good essays or at accepted.com just as a way to get ideas of what to write about.

Now why I say there is no comparison between test preps and essay writing services. Essay writing services sometimes write your whole essay for you which is like someone taking a test for you.

Test preps just teach you the material and give you practice materials to help you prepare for the test and to give you a good starting point of where to begin the review. Also, test prep materials can be obtained without taking the course through students selling their materials for a much reduced price or peers who let you borrow their stuff when they are done with it.

Just because one takes a test prep doesn't mean they'll get a score like the one you got, Justbreathe. It just means that they will have materials that help them better prepare for the test. And taking a course doesn't guarantee a better score then someone who didn't take a course. In fact, if you pay the money and don't do anything but attend class, you probably won't do as well as someone who utilized all the resources that they paid the 1500 dollars for.

Bah, just do it yourself. Have SDN, friends, etc help you write it , but make sure its your own work.

Hey guju,

The relationship i was establishing between test prep and an essay service is that ultimately, they both reduce the amount of work you need to put into the respective task to achieve the same or similiar outcome (given the same level of intellect and effort) as one who does without them.

Honestly, I don't think those that take prep courses and do well have to put in any less work than those that study on their own. They just have study materials more readily available to them - those that study on their own have to be a bit more resourceful.

Of course, I don't think that prep courses are very helpful in the end anyway, from what I've heard. The materials are great, especially practice tests, but the lectures seem to be watered down versions of what you should have learned in your basic physics, chemistry and biology classes.

I am a little concerned about having someone revise an essay for profit.

OP, while I hope you will produce solid essays for applications, be careful not to lose your voice/personality/characteristic in writing.
I figure it'll bite you back during interviews when you are not as eloquent and meticulous as your writing may suggest.

WOW. Good catch. I didn't know this was a necro bump.

Moderators are going to blow up. : (
You didn't bump it. The person before you did. I imagine they are a representative for the company they are endorsing.

Do not waste your money here. I ordered the standard package hoping my essay could be strengthened like the examples posted online. My essay came back with only minor and basic adjustments made. NOTHING LIKE THE EXAMPLES POSTED ON THE WEBSITE. It honestly looked the same. I tried to see if anything could be done about this but I was told that my essay was successfully edited by "their" standards and that no refund would be issued. Just go to your university and they'll do the same job except for free. I'm embarrassed to have paid so much for basic proofreading and minor adjustments.

I just needed to say what happened. Sorry to resurrect this thread. I was gypped! And if this was an advertising thread, then my work is done.

I think that's usually how it feels whenever someone is being positive about a specific product on the internet. Have you ever read positive Yelp reviews? They all sound like they fell out of Media Marketing Firm Inc., or something.
