I applied in September and my app. got sent to schools on October 21st, but I havent gotten so much as a postcard from Columbia. Does anyone know how long they take to get in touch (postcard, interview, anything)? I tried calling but they just tell you to email, which I did but nothing yet. Who has heard back?

Man, I'm in the same boat as you. My app got sent out on oct 21 and I haven't received anything from Columbia. Arrggg.

its only been a couple weeks.. right now is the busiest time of the app season, give them a little more time.

Ok. Ok. Hehe. This waiting thing is stressing me out. I just need to find something to do in the meantime. 😀

They received my application on Oct. 6 and I got a letter inviting me for an interview last week. The earliest interview at that point was early January.

They had my completed app since August.. Didn't hear from them till mid october with the interview invite. I think it says on their site that you can call on Wednesdays to check on the status of your app.

to those that got interviews, what were your stats, if you dont mind my asking

23/19/23 AA/PAT/TS
GPA 3.68 total
3.92 science

interviewed 1st week in october

24 AA and a 3.5 GPA. You can find all my info on the stat page. I'll check which page I'm on. . .

EDIT: I'm on the 4th page of the 2005 applicant stat thread. It's been updated.

to those still waiting to hear from columbia, just have one thing to share with you guys. at my interview there, the dean sat us all down and explained the philosophy behind why columbia's DAT averages are typically the second or third highest amongst all dental schools. he said there is more emphasis on the DAT because, in his words, GPA is not necessarily more indicative of ability since there is so much fluctuation (i.e grade inflation) at schools. the DAT puts everyone on an even playing field. so evidently, the take home message from Columbia is this.. unless your GPA is super low, you have a chance at Columbia if you get awesome DAT scores (21+ AA, TS, 20+PAT). BUT, if your GPA is very high, but your DAt scores are not as high (18,19), then your chances are less.
so just a heads up. straight from the dean's mouth. mcmanus is a hilarious guy. their whole staff is a comedy crew. great interview experience.

that's fine.. i got a 23/23/16.. i apparently lack the ability to discriminate between angles that vary 0.05 degrees, just using my eyes. I suck.

ditto. and why does this matter in dentistry, anyways?

The secret will be revealed once you matriculate.

May I ask what the secret is?

Maybe, in Gross Anat. lab, while the med students finish the entire body, after we're done with the mouth of the cadavers, they give us hole punchers and we punch holes and fold paper six gazillion ways.

sorry for the sarcasm. and yes, yes, i know, med and dents are two different professions,i'm not saying med students are Gods and we are paupers. i just hate the PAT, and truly believe its effectiveness as a measuring/assessment tool on the test is far overblown.

What do you mean by "super low" GPA? Please break it down for me in overall GPA and science GPA. Also, how does the track record of your school play into this?
Please assume applicant has DAT:
22bio 22chem 21ochem 21math 21english 20pat

if i make the assumption that said applicant is you, then you have a perfect chance for columbia (and definitely UOP). super low, i would mean below a 2.9. i think even a person with a 2.9, but 23, 24 on his DAT might have a shot at columbia. obviously there's so many other factors. if you got a 1.5 your freshman year, but worked up to a 2.9 by your junior year of app, that's impressive, and if you get mid 20s on DATs along with that, it would be hard for columbia to ignore.
why.. whats your gpa?

and i don't want to offend anyone. i didn't really mean 2.9 is a "super low" GPA. wrong word choice. how bout this: if your GPA is not competitive enough, but your DATs are off the charts, then columbia *MIGHT* interview you.
