If so, how much do you make an hour. I am thinking about doing this during medical school, and was wondering if it would be worth my time.

I taught for Princeton Review about 4-5 yrs ago and made around $25/hr. It was nice bank for pretty easy work.

I taught for princeton review also, during the second half of '05 and early '06. I made base rate $20/hr and did several one on one tutorials for $30/hr.

I have an interview coming up for them. They ask that you teach them something. I was thinking a magic trick, but the email said nothing "instructional". I don't really know if a magic trick (sleight of hand) would be instructional.. I figure its more interactive and engaging than any other subject.

I think they mean nothing academic. In other words, don't come in and try to explain the Krebb's cycle. I gave a quick little lesson on reading/writing basic music, like notes on the staff and stuff. They just want to see how comfortable you are talking in front of a crowd and whiteboard and if you can articulate and speak well without getting nervous and stuff. After this little audition (which almost everyone passes) you will undergo a training session that lasts 2-3 days. This is more rigorous and only a few pass, depending on how many teachers they are looking for. You may or may not have to take a subject exam as well (so they know YOU know what you are talking about).

I currently teach GChem for TPR and make $35/hr (we got a pay raise from $22/hr this summer) When I did my teacher's interview I taught "How to do a Radio Show" since I had done college radio for 4 years and they seemed to really enjoy it. One of the interviewers had actually listened to my radio show! Magic tricks would definitely work and would be entertaining/fun. They just want to make sure you are an animated speaker and are capable of engaging a classroom of students. TPR looks for amazing teachers who are going to make classtime as bearable as possible (hard to do at times with subject material like the MCAt) Make sure to use the dry-erase board. They look for peope who can use both verbal and written communication since we are dealing with lots of different learners in any given class.

Good luck with your interview!! :luck:

Taught Kaplan before in medical school and made about 25 bucks per hour. It was kinda fun and something good for your CV. The best way to make money is pass step I, II, CS and III, get into a general or any surgical residency, do a couple of years of research (needs to be build into the residency), during your research year apply to get a full license, then set your self up to moonlight in a hospital for gen surg. The current pay is about 85 to 100 bucks per hour, so say you work one night from 6 pm to 6am, you will take home about 1,000 bucks (even if you sleep during the night) or if you work the weekend, one 24 hr shift pays about 2 grand. Not too bad.

It's a decent very part-time job. I make $20-something (I don't remember exactly how much I make, because I just got a raise.) and I work about 6 hours per month, although I could work much more if I wanted to. You have to be able to handle snotty, arrogant, neurotic premeds, and you have to have scores above the 90th percentile on the MCAT. That's about it! And if you work for Kaplan, you get free q bank (and full class prep and books, if you want them) for step 1.
