Got an e-mail through my school's pre-health list stating the following:

Important 2012 Dental Application Information
for theUniversity of Michigan - School of Dentistry . .

Dental Shadowing and/or Volunteering Hours:

Although it has always been important for applicants to explore Dentistry before applying, there is a significant strengthening in policy for the University of Michigan – School of Dentistry.

For the upcoming 2013 ADEA AADSAS application cycle, applicants to the University of Michigan will be required to demonstrate a minimum of 100 hours of dental shadowing and/or volunteering. Applications without this minimum number of hours completed may not be reviewed or these applicants may not be offered interviews.

Please carefully consider this change as you prepare for this upcoming and future application cycles. More emphasis is being placed upon significant time alreadyspent in dental settings rather than exploration that you may have “planned”during the application cycle after submission of your primary application. You are encouraged to continue to explore the field and practice of dentistry well beyond this minimum 100 hours in as many varied settings as possible. An interest in addressing health disparities or a commitment to service and care for underserved communities will continue to be valued.

(The 2013 ADEA AADSAS application will launch on June 4, 2012)

UMich REALLY values students who do mission trips. I've already noticed this the last couple of years and thought it was weird/interesting but after interviewing there and learning about their curriculum...it made sense why. It's safe to say more than half of the class (probably most) have done some sort of dental mission trip.
