Hi. I just found out that I was accepted for the RDEP. This means that I would go to the University of Utah for the first year of D-school and the last 3 in Nebraska at Creighton. I'm super pumped because the advantage of this program is that I only have to pay the equivalent of in-state-tuition. Just some rough estimating shows a savings of around $100,000+ over the course of four years. My other choices are Maryland and BU. In Boston I wouldn't have to pay rent so that makes them about the same price as Maryland.... anyone wanna make a life-altering choice for me?... j/k... but I am really curious to find out if anyone on this site is actually part of RDEP right now and I'm also open to any advice anybody might have for me. Thanks!

The Regional Dental Education Program (RDEP) is a cooperative dental education program between the State of Utah and Creighton University School of Dentistry. It is designed to provide a quality dental education program for Utah residents. The RDEP currently has ten positions available each year for Utah residents.

Go to RDEP, as long as you'll be happy in Omaha for your final three years. Very few things are worth spending that extra 100k, although having some degree of sanity and happiness could be one of those.

If you don't sweat going to Nebraska, then do RDEP. You'll be a fine dentist and have less loans to pay back. That's my thoughts.

it means that i'm a utah resident, creighton accepted me. utah subsidizes the difference between creighton's tuition (around 34K) and the University of Utah's med school tuition (around 17K). meaning I would save around 70K on tuition.

creighton is cheaper than maryland and boston in the first place and so after the numbers add up, it seems like a savings of around 100k. 10 utah residents attend their first year of d-school in utah (amongst med-school students) and then transfer to creighton for the last 3 years.

any thoughts... ?

I'm doing Creighton as is 'gone fishin'. I was accepted to 3 other schools and gone fishin' to at least 4 others I believe. Money wise, it can't be beat. No doubt about that. After I was accepted I went out there to see the Omaha campus and check out the surrounding area. I was pretty impressed. The cost of living is really really good. In Village Green (where most of the med and dent students live) you can get a 3 bdrm townhome for 30K. No kidding. It's great. I have a wife and kid and I think it's going to be great for them as well.

What things are you thinking about? Like, do you have a family, are you going back to Utah to practice afterwards, what did you think of the other school, etc. Anything in particular you want to know?

If I'm not mistaken, you actually pay resident tuition for the first year, then regular tuition for the next 3 years. Then if and only if you return to Utah to practice dentistry, you get reimbursed over a 3 year time period for the "extra" you paid for the last three years of school. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Nope, that's absolutely correct. The way it works was changed and the first year is in-state tuition and the rest is out of state. If you return to Utah, you are reimbursed year for year you are in Utah up to 3 years. I like the way it worked before becuase your loan amount is smaller to begin with and you pay less interest. Even with the change, it's just about the best option money wise you have if you're a Utah applicant.
