Anyone know if arrests have to be reported to employers?

I was recently shocked to discover that my fellow pharmacist at work had been arrested. The charges are so out of character, that I had an extremely hard time believing it was true. She doesn't know yet that I know, but I have been considering offering to serve as a character witness for her in court. I think I could provide very convincing examples to illustrate her true character. Question is... I am not sure if she has reported it to the pharmacy supervisor or not. Is this something that is required in a retail chain? More importantly, if she hasn't told him, can I serve as a witness without telling him? Or could I get in trouble too for not reporting what I know? This is kind of the critical issue for me in deciding whether or not to get involved. Thanks for any help.

Its not your job to get involved or intervene.

You can't get in trouble for being a character witness. If you were a partner in crime and convicted, yes. Furthermore, it's not your duty to report that, because you can't be under the assumption that it hasn't already, and convictions are much more important than arrests or accusations. As long as you're not there to seem like a representative of the company and you could speak about the person in more of a personal capacity. They may ask you to state your name and occupation, but not really the address of where you work or the company.

Whether it's required to report that depends on your company's policies. You could ask an HR rep.

Sparda29, FruitFly and charfdorn - Thank you very much for your responses.

I'm going to give the whole situation some more thought through the weekend and then try to make a decision about it by Monday.

What was it? DUI? Everyone has their moments of stupidity when it comes to the law. Back in high school, I got pretty close to being arrested because I supplied a friend of mine with an aluminum baseball bat, which he used to beat the pulp out of someone else.

Luckily, my friend did not turn on me and said that the bat belonged to him.

No, it was not a DUI. I want to be cautious about revealing the charges since I am not sure who reads this board. I absolutely agree with you about people having moments of stupidity though. I am certain that that is what happened in this case. It sounds very much like a situation that just escalated and got out of control. It seems very obvious that it was something completely unplanned, and something she would never do again.
