I found this excellent site called www.pathguy.com It's by this really funny Drew Carey look-a-like from Kansas.

He basically takes the big topics in pathology and gives it his own no-nonsense spin. Especially, he likes to pick on the "classic textbook cases" with examples from his own autopsies. You know how tall young men develop spontaneous pneumothorax from a subpleural bleb? Not according to pathguy. If there's something he can't figure out, then that's what he writes.

So I was wondering if any SDNer knows the man? There must be some Kansans out there. I dont know why, I just find him kind of intriguing. He's got a destinct redneck vibe to him but OTOH he's got some pretty cool hobbies (like long distance swimming).

Yeah - I think he is prof of path at the DO program out in Kansas. A pathologist I know has worked with him. Word is he is a nice guy and very knowledgable but a total weirdo with no life and lives alone in a house that could best be described as "spartan."

I think he is single if you are interested. Maybe send him an email.

That would be ERF allright, Dr. Friedlander. We call him ERF, which are his initials, but I am not sure what the R stands for, and yes, he is our path professor at University of Health Sciences, the osteopathic school in Kansas City.
He has been known to grab students out of the study hall or library at late hours of the night to go see autopsies that he is performing.
As far as I know, he doesn't live alone, he has a son. ERF can be a bit odd at times, but I have to say hands down he is one of the most brilliant professors I have come across. Our school has a really strong Path program, and ERF frequently teaches at other local med schools as well. He served as a consultant for that weird case where the teenage girl had her baby in the bathroom at her prom (remember that case?).
ERF really knows his path-so I guess that should me feel a bit more confident walking into boards next year.😱

LOL, that's okay. I'm not THAT interested in him.

I would have pegged him as someone who was married to his high school sweet heart or something, though.

He does seem very smart and, what's rare in a pathologist, he seems to be a real people person. His site is filled with little anecdotes and opinions. I love the way he'll place pictures famous people next to the disease that killed them. The site is worth checking out for anyone taking a pathology class.

I really liked the guys description of quackery. link at the bottom left of the front page

WARNING!!!

Do NOT Do his MAZE!!!

You will see it and think "this looks like fun...let's do a maze"

Then you do one and another comes up... "Ooohh..one more"

Then another....."Maybe there are 10...I will do them all"

and yet more keep coming... "maybe they will stop at 50"

Passing 50 you aim for 100...at this point your eyes are glazed over and your legs are crossed because you will not let yourself go to the bathroom until it is over...."Surely he didn't make more then 100 mazes..."

then you pass 100 and get really pissed off...

Do NOT START DOING THE MAZES!

---isn't this kind of a rude and unfair thing to say about someone on a widely viewed forum. You've made him unanonymous, first of all. Then you go on to anonymously insult him. I'm sure he appreciates it.
"Word is..." doesn't sound all that reliable either. Maybe you could have said something like, "slightly eccentric" or something like that if you really felt the need to make him into a "total weirdo."

I don't know about his Pathology notes, 'cause I haven't started Pathology yet, but when I was in secondary school his Shakespeare notes were invaluable! Seriously, if you're at all interested in Shakespeare you should read them.......

pathguy seems to be an interesting chap . I like his site.
I am looking foward to pathology in MB 3. yep yep yep. 🙂 🙂 🙂 😀

hah, i just had him for lecture.

he has a unique style (on all levels) all his own. hey Mary, you remember him right? i havent had his practicals yet, are they tough? seems he posts old exams??

crazy... cant believe he is quoted for that movie.... adds to his, unique persona though i guess...

im glad he is here at KCUMB! very fortunate.

his website could best be described as archaic.

someone should buy him a copy of dreamweaver or teach him how to code.

Nonetheless, it has very extensive content. It would take days to read all of the text.

OMG I love the pathguy! Sometimes I spend hours reading his site. He is awesome. Yeah, his web design is definitely old school, but the content is great. It's such a good general overview of so many topics. I could do without a lot of the religious stuff on his site, but the medical and scientific parts are great.

Pathguy, if you ever need a webdesigner... I am there for you man. 😀

I LOVE pathguy. Discovered him 7 years ago in PA school. I've frequently used his site for review when writing lectures to PA students and his geeky flat-top cartoons make me smile.
If he weren't in Kansas I would like to be his student. I've even thought of going to Kansas to BE his student, but that's a bit extreme.
Read his philosophy of Socratic teaching--very enlightening.

YES, living in Kansas is quite extreme.......you have no idea how tough learning medicine when you share your classroom with cows, chickens, and locals that are half-blind from methanol poisoning. Not to mention the risk of tornados ripping your house out and whisking you away to fairytale lands. 🙄 🙄 🙄

wow, what school do you go to in kansas? i go to ku (which i thought was the only med school in ks.) i have never seen any animals nor half-blind locals. we have state of the art facilities with high speed internet, powerpoint, and running water. are you by chance in that new school in western kansas? i hear they've been recruiting all the top kansas grads.

My friend's uncle had him as a professor. He said that he is a wierd serial-killer type.

well forgive me, as i live here as well and i find your post to be an extremely opposite description of life here. if you do not, well, im sorry for misunderstanding. i did not realize that you did in fact share your class with unsanitary and distracting farm animals along with a number of drug seekers.

when are they shutting your school down again??

chill out? i sung the song for putting on a happy face. what more do you want? awards for your boob job? i could care less.

yea... totally my fault for misunderstanding. please accept my EXTREMELY heart felt and remorseful apology.............

thanks for the apology. it slipped my mind that not all med schools in the area accept only the highest caliber of students. at ku med we pride ourselves in having much more than killer mcat scores. students here also possess a great sense of humor, heartfelt compassion, winning personalities, not to mention killer cleavage (all natural by the way-no awards needed.)

No, not really 😛 . But a quick glance in the Pathology forums on SDN and you'd easily find folks who certainly don't fit the "stereotype" of the typical pathologists.

Back on topic, I used the pathguy site EXTENSIVELY when was worinkg on a PhD in path and I'm sure it contributed to the "super A" grades I received in the classes. 👍

I know pathguy, he was my path teacher in med school at UHS. He is a very brilliant, mensa member and perhaps the most intelligent person I have ever met. He has limited social skill but still very interesting and a fun guy who is proud to be a flattop. No, he is not a runner or swimmer as a matter of fact he is not athletic at all but he love sky diving. He enjoys taking students sky diving or on the next autopsy!

OP--thanks for posting the website link. Wow...a new way to procrastinate online while simultaneously being educated and amused!
