at UMDNJ? I'm guessing since it's a DO school the cut-offs are a little lower? Am I wrong?

In general, if a program is not funded, the admissions is about the same competition as the medical school itself. If you are serious about doing an unfunded MD/PhD program, you can pretty much go to any medical school at all and take a leave of absence to pursue a PhD, which many (most/all?) schools will grant.
