I am 33 and have noticed something like 10-20% of the people in my classes are all older than the usual 19-22 range. I have talked to many of them and discovered that most of them are software developers or engineers changing careers. Anyone else notice this trend ?

Actually, it seems like practically everyone I meet is doing some kind of IT. It's embarassing, really. People ask "So what do you do, liverotcod?" and I have to try to explain all the different IT hats I wear in my job. If you had only my contacts as a sample, you would estimate that 8 out of 10 Americans is in software design.

I can't wait to answer that question with "I'm a med student," or "I'm a physician."

without a doubt you will have that chance..........you will get in..........

ps - how old are you ?

No.. but this is a good trend cause all I see every day are people who aren't old enough to even order a beer and I'm in grad school.

36.

And I agree about the older students, too. In evening courses (which is pretty much all I can take with my job) it's especially pronounced, I should think. Not all pre-meds, though, I wound up studying organic a bunch with a late 30s pre-dental student. Wouldn't you know? An engineer. He hadn't told his work, so he had to sneak off to class. What a nightmare.

When I told a couple of people in biochemistry that I'm 27:

Guy (to Girl): Hey, guess how old she is!
Me: I'm 27.
Girl: 27! I can't believe you're 27!
Guy: It's grandma over here.
Girl: Um, there's someone in physics who's 28.

Me here too. 30 and ASIC verification engineer. Well may we at least be able to crown ourself as "ambitious always with a dream"?

Last year in my engineering classes I got the same thing.
🙄 My new thing is to say "how old do you think I am?" and that's usually followed with soemthing like 22 or 23.. so I say.. wow your really close. Good guess.

31 former sr. planning/design anaylst in eBusiness
in application year. people guess me at 23-25
all the time. :scared:

I turn 33 in October. I'm going to Med School after a total of 10 yrs in the military(Navy 89-96, army guard 2001-2004) and 10 yrs as a respiratory therapist. No one in my classes can believe that I am in my 30's w/ one kid and one one the way. The clothes that the "cool" kids wear now and that are considered fashionable, are clothes that I wore the first time they were in style.

Just a word of hopefulness from the other side of the application cycle. I guess you could say I rode the .COM bubble for some time, made the transition to biology back some time, and can proudly answer the question, "I'm a med student."

It wasn't an easy road, but oh my God was it sweet vindication when i got in! 👍 :luck:

Everyone in here; Keep up the hope! 😀 This process is more a test of endurance than intellect.

Oh, and don't be too concerned about your age. We have plenty of the "non-traditional" students in our class, most of whom have kids.

In some ways, being able to balance a family, fulltime work and school, can make you into an excellent applicant.

27 and a former computer programmer/informatics specialist. It's nice to say I'm in med school now - I don't get the blank stares I used to when someone would ask what I do.

My class at Loyola is a pretty young one (avg. age = 23), but I don't think that is the norm. Also, most of the kids are more mature than me. The youngest guy in our class just turned 21 and always impresses me with his thoughtfulness.

Good luck to those still working on postbaccs and apps!

Wow, by your previous posts I thought you were 21.

Sorry.
