Our organization just doesn't care about us 😡 We're never going to have the lobbying power of the AMA or AOA.

Argosy as a sponsor of the APA convention in August? LOL

Wake up guys! Professional school graduates make up like 50% of all early career psychologists these days. Its too late to shut them out. They are a permanent fixture. If you look at private practioners in many states (ie. california) its hard to find someone who actually went to a university based program.

Argosy's money is the same color and value as traditional university money. The APA needs to pay for their conference, and I am sure they got paid handsomely for the advertising. It's business.

Argosy has been advertising big time at APA for a while. Others in the field have brought up the issue before. From my understanding, even if the APA did not want to associate with Argosy there is little they can do because of potential legal ramifications. Furthermore, if they are willing to pay why would the APA fight it.

I always think about it in another way. While I have not attended APA, its filled with people that have either already received their degree or are already in a graduate program. The few undergrads are probably receiving good advice about grad school already. So, who is Argosy advertising toward?

You are far less cynical than I RE: their presence if you can't come up with a reason beyond advertising to undergrads😉 I'd always assumed it was because they know their existence is controversial and it was a political play (think "kickbacks"). If people think of their sponsorship, they may be less inclined to speak out against them, psychologists who aren't quite as in tune with the overall state of the field might be more inclined to recommend them to undergrads ("branding") etc.

Personally, I actually think there should be legal ramifications because they DO allow them to advertise there, given they are also a government-recognized accrediting body. Seems a conflict of interest to me, though APA may have a way to financially separate accreditation from the convention for legal purposes. Its one thing if PAR, various tech companies, etc. want to sponsor it given APA doesn't have any true authority over them, but schools sponsoring it (whether it is Argosy or Yale) doesn't sit well with me.

I see this "legal ramifications" thing all the time. What are they? As a private organization, If someone asks to sponsor you, you are not required to say yes by law.

This is why i didn't re-new my apa membership yet this year. I think the APA has become really unethical as an organization and has contributed greatly to the internship crisis and the professional school movement.

They are also not required to accredited and sleep with programs that have really horrible outcomes for their graduates.

I think we should protest by not paying our dues until they start putting these programs on probation (like the ones that have a 5% apa match rate). What is the justification for not putting these programs on probation or not renewing their accred?

I agree with you that they have their hands all over this problem and have responsibility to fix it, yet what do you hope to accomplish by withholding dues? Fed up people quitting APA haven't solved the problem yet. I get that it personally feels good to rid yourself of an affiliation with the organization, but I bet many who quit feel like their hands are washed and don't continue to advocate. I'm not trying to naively argue to "work within the system" because I know that hasn't been working out either.

Does the APA website have a list as to which schools have what percentages of APA matched internships?
