I know this doesn't pertain to a lot of people but if I could get ahold of someone or a few people that did I'd like to pick your brain a bit about your premed years there, i.e. profs, major, classes

i went to KU for my first 2 years of undergrad (before transferring to UT). feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

i went to KU for undergrad---the craziest 4 years of my life. am now at ku med---the most intense semester of my life. pm me with any questions 🙂

I'm at KU undergrad, spring is my last semester, wuhuuu!!! PM me if you have any questions. 😀

rock chalk jayhawk! i went to ku for undergrad (graduated in 04) and will start classes at ku med in august. pm me for additional insight.

First of all Congrats! You are currently living one of my dreams! I am at JCCC right now with the intent to transfer to KU Edwards to get my B.S. in Molecular Bioscience before applying to KU Med. Are there any stats out there on how helpful being at KU for undergrad is for getting accepted into their Med program? What about the average GPA and MCAT score for sucessful KU applicants?

rock chalk baby..........KU class of '04 and now KUMC class of '08. To the above poster: KU definitely looks for people with Kansas ties as their preferred prospectives.....as far as KU liking "their own", I would say that they DON'T give KU people props over KState. I'm not really sure about the average #'s for KU, but if you look at their website or check out a MSAR (talk to Darwin, the pre-med counselor at JCCC....he's a damn cool guy), you can get the info there. Good luck, and hopefully you come to KU-Med....i really love it here :horns:

Yo. I'm at KU now, accepted at KU med for next year.

The averages for KU are ~3.5 and 28 MCAT (pretty standard numbers).

If you have any specific questions about classes, profs, etc, post 'em here or PM me (or lilmo, or felipe, etc).

I've absolutely loved my time at KU. Great people, great town, great opportunties for research, and generally good classes (although there have been a couple of exceptions.)

Thanx to all of ya...I'll PM some of you soon to get some info...after my interminable athletic career is over this year (yeah, 4 years and no bachelors degree, sports+premed is not homogenous), i'm transferring up there (next year) to finish my bacc...KU is great, I used to live lawrence and now I go up there every weekend anyways, so I might as well just go to school there...is there a concensus on the fav. hangout in lawrence (wheel, hawk, ranch, yact club?)

It all depends on what sort of social setting you identify with and what your purpose for the outing is.

The Wheel, The Hawk, The Ranch, and Brothers generally have a somewhat "greek" crowd. The Hawk is a good place to pick up freshman girls and The Ranch is a good place to pick up drunk girls.

Personally I like Henery's and The Red Lyon, which seem to attract more of the "hippster" crowd.

Lilmo, Felipe, what are you thoughts?

Very true about the ranch...friday nights you're likely to find more of a college crowd, saturday you're more likely to find some pretty good looking older (30ish) women...if you're in to that kind of thing 🙄

definitely used to dig Henry's upstairs for a chill night.....Louises was also pretty tight (in retrosepct, I shoulda permanently "borrowed" a schooner), and of course, nothing beat my traditional monday night at Freestate, followed by tuesday night at El Mezcal. Besides that, there was always Cork and Barrel on 9th street..........where everybody knew my name

memories................*sigh*

Another KU grad chiming in. Feel free to PM me if you have any ?????? 🙂

the new ricks place is cool (i love shuffleboard)

my rotation consisted of:

Tues--el mez
Wed--Rudy's (yummy pizza. i miss it soooooo much!)
Thurs--80s night
Fri/Sat--house parties
Sun--recover and try to catch up on hw (i miss the good old days of studying once a week.)

one post about going to KU for undergrad and 10 or so people respond.

I can post about KSU all day and not a single person responds from KSU

I guess manhattan has not "found" SDN yet

Do the admissions people push SDN on all the premeddies at KU?

(insert KSU and lack of technology joke here)

man, you're all making me sad haha...seriously though i'm jealous...there's nothing around here...ku next year though baby...can't wait

haha, are there not a lot of pre-meds at ksu...my cousin's on the classy cats dance team so i go up there all the time so i'm familiar with the "lack of technology" you mentioned

I never heard of SDN until after I graduated from KU, so I doubt that's it. 😉

Actually, KUMC was somewhat involved with the inception of the SDN. There is a discussion of it in the history section. I'll try to dig it up and post it here. 🙂

as promised: (this is on the "about us" page, accessable from the main menu)

Roots of the Student Doctor Network

The Student Doctor Network was originally a collection of many medical student web sites. The Student Doctor Network brought together some of the largest medical student sites in the US, and including the very first medical student web site ever, the Interactive Medical Student Lounge.

Interactive Medical Student Lounge

In the fall of 1994, the University of Kansas School of Medicine (Kansas City) began offering e-mail and on-campus Internet access for students, plus lunch hour web page training for faculty and staff. Some people around campus (such as Lee Hancock, originator of the "Medical Matrix" index) had medical data on the Internet, but from the registrar's office, Nancy Sween could not find a site specifically for medical students. She learned HTML and the "Interactive Medical Student Lounge" went on-line December 12 1994 - a free site for students of medicine, worldwide.

Originally at the University of Kansas (12/12/94 to 2/22/97), the IMSLounge moved to GeoCities and AOL in early 1997, then to http://www.medstudents.net (Nov 1998). During 1999, the IMSLounge became a charter member of the Student Doctor Network (SDN).

The IMSLounge develops through the suggestions and preferences of the people who stop by to use it. Katlinel Shlasko has maintained the Lounge pre-med page since 1997.
