So is anyone else thinking about running Ubuntu on their computer for medical school? I just installed it on my desktop and it is pretty awesome. And apparently the Office suite is fully compatible with Microsoft Office 2007. I had vista and xp before and Ubuntu runs ridiculously fast on my computer compared to vista/xp.

I installed Ubuntu on my g/f's old laptop (Dell D600) and it was really slow in comparison to XP. I was certainly expecting it to be faster than XP. That being said, Ubuntu with Compiz-fusion on my desktop does, indeed, rock. Although some of the support for 64-bit Linux is lacking in a lot of applications (flash, Firefox, etc).

Open Office will be able to support OOXML (e.g. the .docx files that office 07 creates) sometime in September. But I'm hearing that OneNote is pretty handy in medical school and I haven't seen any open source projects that are comparable or compatible.

That's odd about your gf's laptop being slower with Ubuntu. Maybe an issue with her motherboard. I don't know. Anyway, I don't know about the Onenote compatibility but I used Onenote extensively in undergrad. I liked it a lot until I tried to move my notebooks to a different computer. For some reason, the notes don't stay organized very well within the Onenote program when you move them to another computer. It starts opening up sections of a notebook as their own notebook. It gets really frustrating after a while. It would be awesome if there was a note-taking app for Ubuntu. Does anyone know of a good one?

Well, notebook.google.com doesn't have as many features but I can guarantee that it works well if you plan on using it on multiple computers.

I have an old copy of Red Hat on this machine that is dual boot with XP, but I don't use RH a lot. I thought about switching over to Ubuntu since I am getting a laptop from DMU that will handle the school stuff, but decided that I probably won't have a lot of time to mess with it if something isn't working right.

Might be fun to try, though.

I've been running Ubuntu for two years now on my Dell laptop, and will put it on my new laptop when I get it. I've also run Gentoo linux, but find Ubuntu far easier to maintain.

As for note taking, Jarnal works really well! You can write over PDF files and all that. Works well with tablets too from what I understand.

Terra, so does this Jarnal version work on non-tablets?

I am planning on compiz fusion for my desktop when I reformat in 2 weeks. Pretty excited, so I'm glad to hear that a lot of compatibilities are still good.

I dual booted XP and Edgy Eft on my tablet. Worked fine, but COMP's video lecture system, Apreso, doesn't work so great in anything except IE. I didn't want to run IE in wine, so I ended up not booting into linux that often. However, now that I'm done with classroom junk, I have been contemplating going back. We'll see, I'll probably still keep an XP partition and boot choice in grub, just in case.

OneNote has been infinitely helpful in note taking for the last 2 years. I would probably use Gournal or Jarnal in linux, or run onenote under wine if I had to.

Yes, I have Jarnal on my Dell 1100 and used it to do a couple secondary apps.

Nate.

installing Ubuntu Ultimate 1.7 on my Lenovo T61 as we speak 🙂 HATE VISTA!!!!!

Also, I recently found this article regarding Ubuntu usability that I think many would find themselves in alignment with. My issue with the distro (although nice) was the lack of wireless adapter driver support (even from online forums) and the "intuitiveness" mentioned in that article.
