Just curious what kind of experience I would get doing an away rotation at Medical College of Wisconsin. How hard is it to schedule a rotation there in August or September? I am planning on doing two EM rotations my fourth year, one at my med school (which does not have a residency) and one away. Thanks in advance for advice!

i don't know a thing about wisconsin, but i do know about having a med school with out an em residency (mine does). i would consider doing your two rotations away, at programs that have a residency and that your interested in....that is unless your school requires you to rotate through the er there. just my 2 cents worth

As a 4th yr rotator at MCW you work about 19 shifts/mo. Shifts are all 8 hrs. Student didactics are decent. Student + resident didactics are good. Not a lot of procedures. I think i sewed 5 or 6 lacs during the whole month. I did that many on some shifts at other EM rotations. I personaly did not get any other procedures outside of pelvics, etc. Attendings are variable. Some are great, others the opposite end of the spectrum but that is probably the case everywhere. Very little US experience (attendings are still doing the FAST exams). If you will not get a lot of procedures/autonomy at your home program I would try to do a month somewhere else where you will get something other than what you are getting at your home program.
