It is highly unlikely that you will get an interview with a 17 DAT and 3.1 GPA.

yea usually you need a high dat to compensate a bad gpa. Unless you have amazing ec or a minority you might want to retake or take some more classes to boost the gpa

I have a low gpa and had a 17 AA 17 TS 20 PAT and received only 1 interview and that was at my state school.... end result: waitlist

If you have a low gpa, I would highly recommend retaking your DATs and get up their in the 20s to increase your interviews and chances of getting a couple acceptances. A postbac would also be helpful to raise your undergrad gpa...

I fall in that category.

3.19 GPA

18/18/19

2 interviews so far 🙄 I do however have lots of ECs as well as good LORs so take this for what it's worth.

Same exact thing happened to me last year (18AA) but I was rejected by my state school, not even waitlisted. Retook the DAT and got a 20, now I have 5 interviews.

In general, to have a legitimate shot at a dental school, you should score at least a 12.0 on the UTHSCSA scale. This isn't a hard and set rule, but you can use this to gauge where you're at and if you're competitive. (Though there are exceptions, as we're seeing in this post)

A modified UTHSCSA formula, which uses a composite of DAT and GPA scores, is: Science GPA x AA/30 x 4 + Overall GPA

According to the UTHSCSA formula:
With a 3.1 GPA overall and science, a 22 AA on the DAT will be competitive.
With a 3.2 GPA overall and science, a 21 AA on the DAT will be competitive.
With a 17 DAT, you need a 3.7 GPA overall and science to be competitive.
With an 18 DAT, you need a 3.6 GPA overall and science to be competitive.

Shoot for a 21-22 on the DAT retake. Good luck!

Cool i never saw this Usctha thing before. I like it though lol.

Don't lose hope, hopefully you get a interview and nail it! People get in with 17's, but usually their GPA is higher

It is cool but its still good to show balance, you dont want to raise a flag with a 17 DAT and a 4.0 GPA so theres no real formulas, ECs LOR and interviews all play a role.

A 17 DAT and 4.0 GPA can be improved with a higher DAT. A 3.1 GPA can't really be improved (unless you do a Masters), so you have to rely on getting a really high DAT on the retake. It's much easier (time-wise) to get a high DAT than a high GPA; a few hours rather than a year or two.

I fall into that category. I have one invite, 2 rejections, 14 left to hear from.

3.13 science. 3.34 overall. 3.5 masters
18AA 19TS 18PAT
EC and Shadowing expericance
community service
great LOR's

2 interviews so far, and that is with not applying early. AADSAS did not get mailed until sept 8 and 2 of the 4 LOR's got mailed yesterday. only one rejection so far. waiting to hear from 10 more.

so there is still a chance God willing

I'm kind of in the same situation

3.1 overall GPA, 2.9 science GPA, 20AA/20TS/19PAT

my aadsas was mailed out mid july and my letters or recommendations were recieved by schools last week. What do you guys think of my chances?

Also, just to prepare for in case I dont get in, I was thinking of doing either a master's or a post bacc program. But I'm not sure which I should do. I know post bacc's help raise your GPA but a master's adds a degree to my resume. What do you guys think I should do?

hi thanks for all the responses! yeah i was afriad that my chances of getting into dental school might be very slim! so i did apply for a masters program in Health administration and i got in because i did very well on my GRE. So at least my safety net is up! but it is really hard to walk away from something that you really wanna do but i guess i really don't have any choice right? 🙁

But as for my dental application all my LOR is pretty strong i have a lot of EC such as i worked for a dental lab and now i am working as a dental assistant. so hopefully they will take those into consideration that i really do like the field of dentistry! so keeping my fingers crossed! and thank you for that link ! because it is really hard to post up ur stat when it is not up above the norm because u don't want everyone to know how deep of a hole ur in right now. but thank you again for the responses!

Masters is a good idea 👍

And you're not walking away from anything, a Masters before applying to dental school is pretty common and a great way to show that you can get good grades, even if you bombed undergrad.
