For my first trick, I would like to get together info from anyone applying to UNSOM for 2007. I'll be braving the cold about a week from now to go check out the campus and interview. I was able to sneak in before the adcom starts meeting in January, even with waiting til the last minute for everything from transcripts to the fantastic residency packet!

Feel free to post any questions/comments/news dealing with the best bargain in medical education, University of Nevada School of Medicine.

Best bargain is right. I was able to interview here in Vegas and didn't have to brave the cold🙂 The campus is beautiful though. I think the first set of acceptances go out jan 15th and every 15th of the month after that. Crossing my fingers big time for an acceptance here! Can't beat the costs to go to school here, thats for sure.

Another UNSOM applicant here. I applied through the early decision program and have an acceptance already. I'll definitely be following this thread to see how my potential classmates are doing in the application process. 🙂

I see you are in Vegas polycon. Where are you jennsnate? Not from Reno from your post about the cold weather I take it! It's pretty nice here today actually so hopefully you'll have decent weather when you visit.

Best of luck to both of you!

Applying to UNSOM too. I'm in vegas now, but am an OOS applicant (Idaho- they save a couple spots for us!!) I interviewed on 11/13 and it already seems like an eternity. I don't know how I'm going to make it until the beginning of the year....

40% chance of snow showers?!

I have nothing against the stuff, I just don't care to fly in it. I've been in Vegas for ~17 years, visited Tahoe a couple of years back, but I've never been to the campus. A friend of mine is in his second year there and offered his couch if I wanted to interview up there. I figured it'd be great to look around and spend some quality time with some of the folks that hold my future in their hands.

Uh oh - don't like to fly in snow? Have you ever flown into the Reno airport before? I've done it a lot and while sometimes it is fine, on windy days the turbulence can be downright scary. I sat next to a pilot on one of these landings and he said that Reno is really tough to fly into - because it is surrounded by mountains on all four sides and gets really really windy.

We really don't get much snow up here fortunately, though I can see how any snow might be too much if you are coming from Vegas! (I'm a Cali native so I can relate  ) Just be glad you weren't here for the winter of 2004/2005 and hope that we don't get a repeat of that between 2007 and 2011. 😉

I think the campus is really nice. It's pretty seperate from the main campus which gives it a nice feel. The main building with the classrooms, administration, and library is new and really nice IMO. And on the tour the first years made a big deal about the anatomy lab being really nice in terms of not smelling like formaldehyde. 😉

You'll have to let us all know what you think after next week!

Good luck to you - it must be a lot more competitive applying as an OOS student! I hope you find out in January. From reading threads last year it looks like they review applications in 3 or 4 groups and you don't know which group you will be in - the January group, the February group, the March group, etc. Fingers crossed that you are in the January group! I interviewed in late September and was notified early October. I thought that wait was agonizing!

So the snow beat me there. I guess traffic was a mess the night before I got there, evidenced by the number of cars left on the roadsides. I got everyone's viewpoint on the adcom's process, enjoyed what I saw of reno and the campus, survived my first interviews, and held a human heart, all in one trip! Now begins the waiting game.

Sounds like you had a great interview! Sorry the snow beat you - did you fly in on Sunday? My husband and I went out Saturday night and saw tons of people stuck.

I hope you get reviewed in the first round. Good luck!

Maybe I am just crazy, but are any of you counting down the days until the 15th?

You are not alone in waiting as well...Adcom commences meetings this friday...here we go.

Best of luck to everyone out there waiting anxiously!

Some of our fates are sealed today. The notices go out on the 15th, so if you haven't gotten a certified letter by next Friday, you're either waitlisted, or weren't reviewed yet. Good Luck

On a weather note, Vegas had a snow advisory today and we're supposed to get 3-inches by tonight.

I recevied my certified letter in the mail yesterday. Woohoo! I am going to be a doctor. What a huge relief.

Best of luck to everybody else waiting on good news!

Cureious, are you in reno or in vegas? Congratulations on the acceptance! That's so awesome🙂

Congratulations! Are you certain you are going to attend UNSOM? I'm anxious to "meet" some of my classmates before August.

I am from Reno and as of right now I am not certain about attending UNSOM. I am still waiting to hear back from a few schools and will probably make my decision a few months from now. However, UNSOM is awesome, great rate on tuition, and the school is headed in a really good direction. Thanks for the congrats and I wish the best of luck once again for everyone anxiously awaiting the arrival of that letter in their mailbox.

This is such a long weekend. Cooped up indoors because I can't stand how cold it is outside🙂 And there's no mail tomorrow!!

Good luck to everyone that is waiting. I'm an OOS applicant and just found out they don't accept OOS until Feb 15th. I have a whole month left to wait!!!!

Is it true?! No! I'm OOS, and I was sure my interviewer said I would hear something in January. Nothing was mentioned to me about there being no OOS offers until Feb!! dang it! I told everyone I'd be hearing from Nevada this week. AHH! Did this info come straight from the admissions office?

My interviewer also told me I would hear in Jan but my pre health advisor told me not til Feb so I emailed Cathy Four and she confirmed that OOS don't hear til Feb. Bummer I know!!!!

That's too bad that OOS'ers won't hear anything until next month.

Did anyone of the people in Las Vegas get anything in the mail today?

Sad! Just checked the mail and NOTHING🙁 Still waiting in vegas...

No news yet. Just to clarify- if they reviewed your app will you get something in the mail (accepted/rejected)? And no mail = waitlisted or not been reviewed? Should you bug the admissions office each month to see if you've been waitlisted? I've heard several diff. variations.

The insanity is setting in.

Along the same lines, one of my faculty interviewers said that the January group is the cream of the crop (ie- top= mcat x gpa) in order to give them time to select from the 50 schools they've been accepted to. So whether the grouping is random or not remains a mystery to me.

This is what I know and for the most part I think is true. Every month around the 15th up through March the only letters sent out will be acceptances. On april 15th all of the rest of the applicants will be notified of an acceptance, waitlisting (i think they tier it as well and indicate which tier you are in), or a rejection. As I said earlier, before this time, all notifications are acceptances only. Therefore, if you call the admissions office they will probably not be able to tell you at the time before april 15th if you have been waitlisted. I could be wrong on this, but this is the general story I have been hearing around campus at UNR. I hope this helps.

As for this, I am pretty sure the grouping is not random. I have heard from numerous people that they rank the applicants and form a pile from these rankings. They start from the top and then move on down the list according to the rank, which as far as I know is based off of some sort mathematical formula dependent upon MCAT and GPA.

Thanks for the verification. If you don't mind sharing your stats cureious, just so we can get a rough estimate of where we lie, also I call dibs on your spot should you decide to leave town.

Not to continue talking circles around the same topic, but we were discussing med schools in lab today and this kid says he received a rejection letter from Reno yesterday! Weird, just when you think you got it all figured out, now I don't know whether to hit or hug the mailman if he comes to my door. Also, I got an email asking for fall's transcripts, which I had hoped to withhold as long as possible, anyone else get a similar request?

Hey Jenn yes if you're still in undergrad and finishing up pre-reqs then they ask for fall transcripts as well as springs. But if you're done, I don't think they would. At least they didn't ask for mine. I'm a re-app and I remember them asking for mine when I went through this the first time.

Interesting - they haven't asked for my Fall transcript yet. I'm still finishing up pre-reqs. There was a "remaining coursework needs to be completed at a level similar to past performance" clause in the acceptance letter so I know they'll care. 😉

Every letter UNR sends out is certified, which means the mailman brings it to your door and will not leave it in the mailbox. Rejections also. They send acceptances and rejections out after each committee meeting. If you haven't got a letter by I'd say, the 20th of the month, then you are either waitlisted or have not been reviewed yet. It looks like we're waiting until next month to sweat bullets each time we hear the mailman pull-up.

Applications ranked by average MCAT x GPA. Committee meets 3 times, Jan, Feb, March. Waitlist letters sent March 15th. Waitlist organized into three levels. The only time they meet in April is if they have a lot of applications left that they are up in the air about.

THe mailman brings it to your door?? Well, I'm assuming they would leave a little slip in your mailbox if you weren't home..

Or leaves it at your door to get blown around in the wind.....

I got my acceptance letter on 1-13 and decided to check in on SDN. I started an Allopathic class thread for UNSOM if anybody wants to check that out. I'm a SDN rookie and actually created my account after being accepted to hopefully meet some future classmates!

For those that got accepted:
Did you get a financial aid offer/information (other than financial aid info will be sent later)? Are you planning on attending UNSOM? Where did you do your undergrad? I did my undergrad here in Reno and will definitely be going to med here. Hope to meet some of you soon.

My understanding of the acceptance process at UNSOM is that they meet once a month and send out acceptances on the 15th of each month. From my understanding they don't send any rejections/waitlist notifications until april 15, so if you get a certified letter from them before then it is likely good news. OOS-ers are not reviewed until 2-15 as far as i know.

Congratulations WolfPackSOM! Glad to see someone else here who is definitely going to attend UNSOM. 🙂

I posted in the Allo class thread you made and answered a lot of your questions over there.

Sadly, I know from personal experience that rejections are sent, certified, every month. Got one in Jan of 2005.

Do the acceptances come in small envelopes or big? Just so I know whether or not to answer the door once I look through the peep-hole.

My acceptance package came in a big envelope.

Yup - big envelope. They send you fingerprint cards for a background check with the letter.

Good luck Steiner - I'm rooting for you!

Any of you at unlv? It seems you're all at Reno. I swear I see pre-meds all over the 3rd or 5th floor of the library but none I have come across on sdn. Anyhoo just wondering..

UNLV here, graduated in 2003 and came back to finish second bachelors in Bio, got accepted to Osteo school, so dropped the last two classes to save money and spend time with my wife and kids.

I'm at UNLV as well. It's weird, it seems like everyone is applying next cycle. I don't know anyone from my classes or other bio friends that are applying this cycle.

hopefully that bodes well for everyone applying now.

UNLV also, if accepted i'll have to take ~10 credits this summer to finish my bio degree! I know of 5 or 6 applicants in my classes (evolution, histology, biochem II, etc.) some of 'em have been accepted to DO schools, but are still crossing their fingers for Reno. I also met one guy who got accepted but didn't find out until a follow up letter/email, which was sent to clarify something in the packet that for whatever reason never got to his house and was just sitting at the post office 😕 !

Yeah I know some got accepted at Touro. I'm a grad student at UNLV so don't come across pre-meds in classes anymore. I would think there would be a lot more people applying to med school, but I think people have switched to pre-dental since the school opened.

Anyone know if the February meeting is going to be a week early like the January one? Usually they meet and send letters around the 15th of the month, but everyone who got in got their letters between the 12th and 14th I think. Anyone from UNR right now that can give any insight into when they meet?

I was thinking of posting in the UNSOM class of 2011 thread, but thought I might jinx myself if I did. This applying 3 times thing has got my nerves fried.
