Hey guys,

Sorry if this has been asked before, I found a few similar threads but could use a little more help.

So I'm new. I will be taking my first actual dental school pre-reqs as a senior next year (majoring in poly sci currently). I'm trying to make a few plans and backup plans to really nail this goal of being a dentist.

Could I do this?

Senior year - finish degree, 1 year of physics and gen chem
Bonus year - 1 year of o chem and biology, take dat
Next year - Start Dental School

So obvious problem is Dat timing I believe. (and if I'm even smart enough!!) I can't really take the Dat at the time schools want while still have learned enough O chem. My mindset is to do whatever it takes and I can't wait to get started.

Appreciate anyone who reads and responds!

Edit: The reason I ask this now is I have some time right now, was wondering if I could start studying for the DAT now

I don't think dental schools really like an application that just has a DAT score, gen chem, and physics. You really need ochem and some bio classes before you apply. I would add an extra year in your plan.

Got ya. Thanks for the response.

Just to probe a little bit, Would say adding an anatomy class or something along those lines to one of those years be something that would help with that?

Not trying to make it seem like I know what I'm talking about lol just trying to figure out all the logistics!

Required prerequisites for dental school are usually 1 year of biology (bio 1 and 2), general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, English and calculus.

Yes it would help. I think you should take physics last honestly, its probably the least important prereq and many people just take it during the gap year before dental school. You really want to have the Gen Chem, ochem, and biology grades on your application when you apply.

Good to know, thanks for your help! I'm never surprised anymore at my naiveté. At least I know what to do!

Right. This I knew, for whatever reason I thought I could apply the same year I attend. I got a ways to go, thats for sure.

thanks ya'll, sorry for stupid questions

No questions are stupid! I would definitely recommend you take all of the prerequisite courses before talking the DAT or it is just going to be a waste of money. Physics should definitely be the last course on your mind. I would recommend doing gen chem and bio together and then ochem and physics. Also anatomy isn't required for the majority of dental schools however I know a few dentists who have recommended it just so you have some general idea when you start anatomy in dental school (however this certainly isnt mandatory.) also make sure you have a good number of shadowing and volunteer work. Best of luck to you in the following years!
