Hi everyone,

Does the AOA have dual-board residencies like that in allopathic residencies?

For example:
IM-Pediatrics
Pediatrics-Psychiatry
etc.

Curious.

Thanks.

I assume that they aren't very common then. Would a D.O. be competitive for a dual-board allopathic residency? (ex. med-peds, psych-meds, etc.?)

i would say yes, because most of the dual-accredited positions are in the DO-friendly regions. and if they have any bias against DOs, why go to the trouble to have AOA accreditation.

He didn't mean dual-accredited, he meant dual-boarded (nothing to do with AOA vs ACGME).

Most are not that competitive from what I know. Geisinger has its years of filling vs not filling.

I see that Geisinger offers a Meds-Peds residency.

Some AOA dual-board residiencies

IM/EM
IM/Peds
EM/Peds
Sports Med/Family Practice
Family Practice/EM
Family Practice OMM

There are DOs at several of the med peds programs.

My exboyfriend is at one and interviewed at several.

There are also DO residents at Wash U (my mom's hospital for heart disease), Johns Hopkins, and the University of Chicago (alma mater).

So, from my prospective, the top schools are more DO-friendly that most people think and more DO-friendly than the average program. This all bodes very well for those of us coming out of school in the next few years.

I too am looking at these dual programs and I'm not worried about the DO thing.

I've already made up my mind and have no doubts it will work out well in the end.

I'm going to worry more about residency when I come to that fork in the road.

Good Luck!

OSU-COM is working on adding some dual programs. I've not heard when they're planning on having them in place.

Meds/Peds at Geisinger.

I think Geisinger is an ACGME residency, but they do have the first year of most of their primary care residencies approved for the AOA transitional year/rotating internship. They are very heavy laden with DO's though, and Janet Weis Childrens Hospital provides a very good level of pediatric care in the geographical area.
