Going to be a freshman next year and just got my AP scores. I got credit for Calc BC so do I need any more math?

I did search and basically some people were saying 'yah ur good', some said 'no you gotta take a year of math', some 'yeah it counts but doesnt look good take calc1/stats for easy A', and some said 'it depends on the school, check their site'.

so i dunno whats going on. I don't know what schools I'll end up applying to so i cant check that now. I just want to be able to apply and not be restricted b/c of ap credits.

So how does it work? dont wanna take more maths if i dont have to, nomsayin?

Some medical schools do not accept AP credit for calculus, but usually they will if you take an additional upper-level math course (which sucks, I know). I had Calculus AB credit (for Calc. I) but did not take an additional upper-level calculus course. I did take a cross-listed Mathematical Biology course, so if it comes down to that I'll try to use that.

thanks. damn, its kinda like the ap credit doesnt count for much if you still have to take more math.

if i do have to take more, i wanna just take easy ones. these are the two i wanna take if i have to:

130 Survey of Calculus / 3 UNITS
A terminal mathematics course giving an introduction to the concepts and techniques of elementary differential and integral calculus. Note 1: This course is not equivalent to MATH 150, and will not serve as a prerequisite to MATH 151. Prerequisite: MATH 114 with a grade of C– or better, MATH 115 with a grade of C– or better, or pass Level 2 mathematics placement exam within the previous year. (every semester) Syllabus
^ but this one is kind of like precalc, cause its lower than calc (math 150 in this case) so i dunno if that would look fine to the med schools
120 Introduction to Statistics / 3 UNITS
Probability as a mathematical system, random variables and their distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and other topics in statistical inference. Prerequisite: MATH 114, or MATH 115 or equivalent. Syllabus
^should be an easy class

anyone else care to help out?

Math is math..if it has the designation, just take the class and get an A

If you're going to play the pre-med game, I would suggest not carrying over your Calc BC credit and taking Calc I and II again. You'll learn more than you did in high school, but you're going to have a headstart on your classmates that did not take Calc BC. These two math courses are worth big credits so if you put in the work and get more A's, you're off to a good start.

But if you're going to college more to learn new things.. then consider going with Calculus III and maybe Linear Algebra/Differential Equations. I was an engineer in undergrad and those were some interesting classes (albeit required for my major).

I'd suggest redoing the classes if you're the type who can sit through repetitions of something you know already. If not, statistics and Calc III aren't too bad and will be somewhat useful later on 🙂

thanks man. i guess i'll be playing the pre med game cause i dont really wanna take any harder math. i looked at the requirement links and most say something like '2 semesters of math' with some saying '1 semester calculus'.

id rather not take calc2 (cause i was bad at it) so i'll take intro stats and calc. but does the class that i described above (survey of calc) fulfill that or does it have to be calc1? math isnt my thing so i just wanna make it as easy as possible.

would the survey of calc class that i listed in my 2nd post above fill the designation of 'semester of calc'?
if you got BC credit then you must be pretty decent at math. I got AB credit in high school and only took stats in college. It has been perfectly fine for me although I didn't apply to any top schools.
lol i kinda sucked at bc (fukin taylor series.. how do they work?). looks like it worked fine for you so thats a good sign.

thanks man. do you think the survey of calc class i listed above satisfy '1 semester of calc' or no?

thanks guys

My school requires one semester of statistics, and I think an increasing number of schools are moving to add that requirement.

So you'll probably need to take that either way, and it'll be good for your further development as a physician anyway- some of the stuff you learn in statistics are going to be important for Step 1 at the minimum.

It's been 3 years since I applied to med schools, but IIRC most schools seem to require one semester of calculus.. some may require two. Be sure to read the requirements for the schools you're most interested in attending.

If you're at a larger university, they usually have calculus courses for non-science majors. Those are far easier compared to the ones geared specifically for the hard sciences. As for your courses at your university, the best source of information would be your premedical advisor who can tell you if med schools have accepted that one class in the past.

do you think its ok if i take the 2 math classes i listed?

edit; some of them say stuff like '1 semester calculus', would the course i listed count as that?
Unless you plan to aim for Harvard-level med schools, You will be fine for many med schools with just the AP credit you've already got. Taking a pre-calc class when you already have calc credit is ridiculous (and looks silly). Instead, take Statistics, as it is easy and a math class that will actually be useful for the rest of your career.

I'm in the same boat as you. I also have Calc BC credit but I'd rather take another interesting course instead of having Calc rehashed to me again.

Most med schools, including Haravard-level schools, will accept AP credit for Calc as long as you take Stats courses.

For me, my school would've let my score count for precalc and calc (thereby completing a sequence of prereq) or calc 1. I ended up doing the latter and retaking calc 2. Easiest class ever and the prof knew I had already taken calc so I got out of doing a lot of the really boring stuff.

That said, I would've gladly taken calc 3 had it ever fit in my schedule but I'm kind of a math person. My dad ( a math major) said calc 3 was the funnest class he took in college. So, in the end, it'll be your call but I'd say take stats and potentially retake calc 2 if you enjoyed it the first time round.

Sorry to be abother but that list is outdated. The Texas schools and Nebraska will take AP credit. There was a thread on this a couple weeks back. that had schools requirements
Yes, I know it is old, but at least it is a starting point. I missed the newer thread unfortunately, but appreciate the heads up. Anyone have a link?

Ill try to find the topic where a sdn member had a list of some schools ap policy. Gimmie a sec
