I used AP credits to skip out of general chemistry, and I never took any inorganic chemistry. I did take organic (with lab), and I did take biochem (although one semester of it was Pass/Fail). Some schools don't allow AP credits (UCLA, Vanderbilt) and some don't allow Pass/Fail (Vanderbilt). Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

  1. How strict are these schools? Is it any different for MSTP (I could see it being either more or less strict)?
  2. Are there any other schools who have this restriction that you are aware of?
  3. If I apply anyways, will it kill my chances of getting in? Could I just plan on taking the balance of the courses over the summer before school (I'm non-trad, so I can't take them this year)? Or should I not bother applying?

Thanks very much for any thoughts you might have.

I used AP credit to skip out of the first quarter of GChem, and "Inorganic Chemistry" is just Gchem in med-school speak (I'm aware there is an actual inorganic chemistry class, with metals... that's almost never what schools require).

You should NOT take pass-fail classes that count for your sGPA. I didn't take a single P/F class, although the AP credits obviously did not count toward GPA.

My application went fine for UC schools (there weren't any prereq problems with them).

I'm sorry I can't be of more help but you will need specialized experience with those specific schools...

I'm not sure how old this link is, but here is a list of schools that do not accept AP credit for pre-requisites. Of course, I would still look at each individual school's requirements. As you can see, this is a pretty long list, so be prepared for there to be schools that won't accept your AP credits for gen chem--you may need to suck it up and retake gen chem if you are really interested in these schools. It also couldn't hurt to ask for them to make an exception, but don't count on it.

If you took one semester of biochem that was NOT P/F, this will count for any school's one semester biochem requirement. Still, I would not take any more science classes P/F if I were you. It doesn't look that good, IMO.

Upper division classes in those areas will suffice (inorganic chemistry classes for AP chem credit, neuro w/lab... for biology, electro/mag and quantum physics for Phys II). However, if you don't want to do that, you can take the lower division ones for credit.
