Is anyone going?

I wanted to, but it's a lot more expensive than what I expected. Hotel + Flight + Registration + Other Costs are going to put this at possibly over $1,000.

Most schools subsidize APhA annual for their students, so wait and see if your does. I remember ours paid for hotel, as well as for registration 1 of the 2 years that I went.

I am! I get registration paid for but hotel and flight are on our own. I think I can get a cheap flight. Either way, I am going! I loved Midyear Regional so I am very excited for nationals.😀

People in my chapter said that reimbursement will just depend on several factors, including how many members go to annual. But I won't be seeing any of that reimbursement money after I get back.

Registration is $225, Hotel is around $300. Flights are $250-$400 depending on which airport I choose. Adding in gas money to get to the airport and parking for leaving my car there, I'm looking at $885-970 to start. Then I can expect to spend more money than I do here when I go out to eat, so that's likely to tip it over $1,000.

I could stay with friends or family members, but I won't be able to rely on them completely because they have work and wouldn't want to drive to the airport at odd hours.

Let's say for example that I got reimbursed $300 and that I spent $100 going out. With my cheaper estimate above, it would put me at a net total of $685. Still kind of pricey, IMO but only because we're still students.

If the school pays for my registration I'll go. Only problem is our school does it by how active you are in APhA and I'm not active at all.

Los Angeles > New York

I'm a New Yorker and I love LA/SoCal, but NY is definitely better. Public transport is a real option in NY, traffic is bad in NY but nowhere near what it can be like in LA. Something I love/hate about LA is the friendliness of everyone there. It's nice, but then you can't tell if they are being fake nice.

For example, I went to LA last year with my buddies. We go to a club, and we meet some chicks there that my buddy knows. At the end of the night I get a kiss goodnight from a couple of the chicks. There I am thinking I'm going to get laid tonight, my buddy notices me still in a daze and is like "umm yeah, those girls have boyfriends, they are just friendly like that here in LA".

I have to agree with Sparda. NY is better. And you can't trust Cali people. New Yorkers may be considered a hole-ish sometimes but at least you know they are for real. I dig east coasters.

So I'd be disappointed with girls I meet in LA? I hope I don't derail this thread too much

Not ALL girls but the girls I dated from Cali were....a little on the materialistic side. Except the brazilian. She was fabulous.

There are some great women out there. You just have to sift through the blonde bimbos, botox faces, fake boobs, and gold diggers.

Guaranteed that most girls you meet from LA/Orange County will be materialistic, especially when you're talking about Asians (Indians, Persians, Chinese/Korean/Japanese). If you don't regularly buy them stuff, they won't be happy. I met quite a few that were like, "what, you didn't get a car on your 16th birthday?". Not to mention, apparently boob jobs are quite the common 16-18th birthday present over there from the parents.

Agree that East Coasters are more real...would take Boston, NY and their attitudes over the fakeness of LA anyday.

Enlighten me. What as a student would you gain by attending APhA?

How is it free if you're spending $1000 to go.

Good point.

Do you ever go as a pharmacist? I think you said something about precepting students, but I wasn't sure if you were involved in any ASP stuff.

Hell no.

I would never pay my own money to attend any conference.

Also, what has APhA done???

At least ASHP & ACCP have made some contributions to the progress of pharmacy profession.

Ah, don't most schools pay for their students to go? Touro gave me like $900 for the APhA trips. I probably wouldn't go as a pharmacist.

I heard from a Touro NY student that you don't even have to attend any specific parts of the meeting in order to get reimbursement. Is that true??

Man convention in LA? What idiot proposed that idea? If you're gonna have it in so cal, at least have it in San Diego or even Orange County.

LA is just...logistics nightmare, not that much to do within walking distance.

Yah I really never understood the purpose of APhA...I've never seen it really useful in anything, at least ASHP and ACCP are integral to their areas of practice.

keepin' it rrreeaaall

who cares if people are real or fake...if you can see through it and function, it's not a big deal.

and lol you said cali...spoken like a true out-of-stater.

One thing you all must know about us californians...as vain and self-centered we are, we usually don't care (or aren't aware) of anything happening outside of our borders.

We're surrounded by an ocean to our west, mountains to our north and northeast, a desert to our southeast, and a heavily fortified international border to our south. it's sortof a metaphor for how closed off we are.

Further, those in northern california tend to disown their so-cal brethren. They're a bunch of fakes who steal our water and don't know how to drive in the rain.

The best thing about california is their number of (blue) electoral votes :meanie:

...and san fran. San fran is cool.

What? Come again??

2/3 of the population lives down there, they can vote for all the state water projects they want.

it's ok, if there's ever a war, a few well placed rocks into the canal = the south will shrivel up and call uncle in 3 days flat. :meanie:

I had a pharmacist friend go once strictly for all the live ce. She needed like 20 hours within the next couple months and it was to the easiest way to get a bunch of them.

If you guys have never walked across the Golden Gate bridge and are dissing CA, you have no idea what you're talking about.

As I said, san fran is awesome...been there several times. I've walked across and driven across with my head out the window....it was amazing!!

Insight into upcoming legislation and lobbying efforts, potential insights into future of the regulatory and practice environment , ie scoping out some of the future of pharmacy for personal and profit purposes.

Of course you could just do most of that at home on the internet. :meanie:

That said, conferences are not something I would spend money on , ever.

If someone is paying for you to go, chances are you stand to benefit since the ones with the money ie decision making power decided to send you. ( ie what Z said)

:meanie:

the only tap i drink is SF city water which is a direct pipeline from Hetch Hetchy...some of the purest water in the world.

i don't trust tap water :eyebrow:

I might go? My school will reimburse for this. The educational sessions do not look as interesting as ASHP sessions however.

I thought it was in orlando this time, in 2013.....Is it really in LA?

I spoke with a potential employer about an internship position this summer as well as scheduled an event to have the employer speak at our college. So I think I gained a little already with the potential to gain a career in a pharmacy setting I've only dreamed about. Plus, I got to go to Hollywood, Beverly HIlls, and a Thunder Clipper game. YOLO
