Hi everyone! I am reaching out for insight on what my future would look like for me. I failed part 1, unfortunately. It’s something that I know I have to prioritize. However, I have to submit externship rankings before I do have to retake. I would like to know whether that would affect my program selections. I don’t need any criticism on why I failed despite having a decent GPA; I know that I will have to address it when I have residency interviews if asked. I’ve reflected on it and already feel motivated to take on the retake! FYI, I’m not aiming for the “top tier programs” that everyone talks about. Just like the mid-tier programs that I’m personally interested in!

As I recall, pass/fail on part 1 didn't weigh heavily on clerkship selection. I had classmates who failed part 1, passed the retake, then went on to do clerkships like usual. I'm sure there's at least one program out there that uses this as a weed-out criteria if they're overrun with applicants, but more likely it's a GPA cutoff for that.

That's so refreshing to hear. Thank you for your reply!

Anyone can have a bad test day. It happens. A program director will know your current status for the exam, but it won't matter much to the majority once you pass the retake. Make a schedule and follow it. All the best!

it really does not matter, i know people who failed part 1 twice and/or part 2 twice, and they matched at their #1s, the sky is not the limit
