APPE Hours Requirement

So here, we have a 160 or 168 hour requirement for APPEs (I forget which one). The rotations are scheduled Monday-Friday, from the 1st day of the month till the last day of the month. Our school just sent a memo saying that you must go to the site for the full duration of the month, even if you complete the hours requirement before the month is over (which a few of us did because we sometimes stayed at the site for 14+ hours/day).

Is this the same everywhere else?

You got "Credit" for the number of hours assessed by the school, but we didn't keep track during the rotation.

We have set dates for the rotation and you go for those dates. The hour requirement is sort of like a minimum. I ended up doing 168 hours for my IPPE but only needed 160. Depends on the preceptor too. Mine was pretty lenient and I just ended up enjoying my time there and staying longer. I heard that with other rotations, you essentially have to beg for a day off because they don't want to go outside the set dates at all.

My school was like this too. We got course credit for all our rotations, but the number of APPE hours they turned in to the board was the same for everybody, regardless of how much time we were actually at the sites.

Our rotations were 200 hours. That's a minimum required for graduation, not a number you have to achieve and then quit. If it's 10 hour days for five days, you still have to do all five weeks.

We had a minimum amount that had to be done for each rotation, but definitely no maximum. We were expected to be at each site until the work was done, whether that was 8 hours or overnight call with the MICU team. I ended up logging well over 80 hour weeks on some of my rotations, not including time spent reading on the things I'd never seen before.

If you're looking to do a residency, finding ways to achieve the bare minimum is not the way to do it.

They say you have to go in 42.5 hrs/week (40+lunch) for the entire rotation (be there every day). Some rotations have some work from home as a part of those 42.5 hours, and some let people go early some days. So there are rules, but they aren't always enforced. If they were, I think it would be a huge pain.

Most places... it's usually the following:

School says, "must go for all hours, roar."
Preceptor says, "you can go early, don't worry, i won't say anything if you won't."

It's always preceptor's discretion, and usually you end up making up for it anyway by staying late one day and coming in early the next.

Very few times have I heard of preceptors being absolute sticklers for keeping you the whole time, even if you sit around with your thumb in your ass, but it does happen.
