I was wondering why well paid surgeons such as Ophthalmologists from Canada would want to head to the US? It seems like the number is small, but they do seem to go. As far as compensation is concerned, I would think Canada is just as or even more appealing than parts of the US (especially the densely populated cities). The only other reason I can think of is lack of OR time or inability to break into popular places like Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton etc. I think I once read an article from a Sask Ophtho who cited this reason or some other aspect about lack of work. YET, the biggest appeal for Optho to stay here would be low overhead right? I mean if you can get decent days in the hospital it is not like you have to invest in all that technology and equipment.
