APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2020)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi dear, this site does look interesting but their website really doesn't provide much of a picture on their clinical training, which is why I'm excited to learn more about them. My thoughts on their interview notifications is that they are sending them out on a rolling basis because 1) they didn't offer me ANY alternative interview dates, 2) the interview date they offered me is vastly different from the one quoted in their information (12/19), and 3) in their original mass email they ended it with "Please respond to this invitation for an interview. If we do not hear from you, a non-acceptance for interview will be listed for your application." so I'm wondering why they feel it's necessary to include that one line, do a lot of people just not reply?

so hang in there! I try to comfort myself by reminding myself that this is all about fit. They are not the only ones "shopping around" for you, you are also doing the same and if they don't invite you for an interview then it probably wasn't a good fit anyway!

Thanks so much for your reply and insight! It helped my perspective for sure 🙂 I have my fingers crossed for an interview there, and wish you all the luck during your interview!

Ok...so I just got this email. Can someone help me decipher this. Maybe I'm just thinking too much, but this sounds like a pseudo rejection:

Thank you so much for your application to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Psychology Internship Program.

Our policy is to invite a relatively small number of applicants to Oklahoma for personal interviews. We have selected the names of the individuals we plan to invite. Although you were not on the list to be invited for an interview, we still remain interested in your application, and you still are under consideration for a position here. In the past, we have selected some interns for positions here whom we never invited for a visit, so please continue to keep our program in mind as a potential internship placement. We hope you will rank our program on your ranking list to the national Matching Service.

Our program has four funding source placements including Veterans Administration, Veterans Administration Neuropsychology, Child Clinical, HRSA, Neuropsychology and Pediatric Psychology. Please feel free to rank any one of the above options as possible placements.

Thank you again for your interest and we hope you will consider ranking Oklahoma among your possible choices.

Hi! I'm still eagerly waiting for a response from this site. May I ask what HRSA funding entails? I applied for the neuro VA funding. Seems like they're sending emails as they review rather than in bulk (or at least I hope). Also, CONGRATS!!
Hi, thanks! The tracks vs. funding sources are a little confusing. The e-mail said HRSA funded, which is the Integrative Behavioral Health track. (I also applied for the Clinical Child track, but perhaps did not get an interview for that track?)

Ok...so I just got this email. Can someone help me decipher this. Maybe I'm just thinking too much, but this sounds like a pseudo rejection:

Essentially, they have a tiered ranking system. Easiest way to think about it is that there are 3 tiers. 1st tier is their top, and they invite those people to interview. 2nd tier are people in the middle, who they will still rank for placement, but are not invited to interview. 3rd tier are straight rejections. You are in the 2nd tier.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I must admit, this one threw me off. I even forwarded this to some folks I know and they couldn't make heads of tails of it. But your explanation was great. Well...I suppose on paper they think I'm okay, and that I can still rank them and be considered.

I would definitely still rank them, no reason not to.

I echo what others have said. I have a professor who matched with a site that did this. She didn’t get invited to interview but ranked them and matched! Who knows with this crazy match algorithm!

It's odd I suppose lol. Wouldn't it be weird that they ranked me (God knows where on the list), without even meeting me? I wouldn't think they would rank me above someone they interviewed either. Who knows. I will still rank them.

It's very likely you'll be ranked below those who they invited to interview (unless some of them have red flags), but it's definitely still possible that you could match there if those they invited to interview ranked other sites higher/match to other sites. Doesn't hurt to include them in your rank list!

The email implies that you're still in the running! Getting an email from them is great news--gives you an idea of their process.

To add to this, I've heard the phrase- "you're looking for a fit, not a spot." It's more important to find a strong fit rather than any spot. And especially considering that the APPIC match is in students' favors more than it has ever been in almost a decade, we all have a really good chance of finding a perfect fit!

Didn't you say you already applied to 30?...and you've only heard from 4? I don't want to be the one to say it, but you still have a LOT of time, especially because Thanksgiving is late this year. I know it's hard, but trust the process and give it more time before applying to more... you haven't even heard from 3/4 your sites yet. 😉

Lol, yes, 30. Very true. However, as I think I may have mentioned before, seeing a bunch of these invites go out makes me think I'm in the rejection pile. I suppose they could be going out in "waves."

That's definitely possible, and my friend last year got an invite 1 day before their notification deadline (Mt. Sinai NeuroRehab). I really think the trend is waves currently. And If they don't send out rejections, I don't want to go there anyway haha they are too unorganized for me. Hang in there! As a side note, when I see my sites send out invites to others and not myself, it makes me more anxious, especially because it could mean soo many things, or a rejection. I'm trying to avoid looking on here, it's really helping with my anxiety haha

This site is like an addiction...it's difficult to kick at the moment. lol

I applied for this track and just received an invite. The track was not specified in the mass email.

A friend of mine in my program just got an invite for this program and Primary Children's Hospital in Utah.
