APPIC Interview Invitation Thread (2021)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have an interview scheduled for Monday but haven't received the schedule or zoom. My anxiety says I got missed but I logically realize it likely hasn't been sent out yet. Any recommendations on when to reach out?

I was given the schedule and zoom links for an interview the day before at noon, which had me anxious I had been missed as well! Especially if it's the site's first interview day, I would guess they're just running behind in finalizing the schedule and materials. I think it would be reasonable to reach out a full business day before. Good luck!

Thank you! That's helpful to know 🙂

I think we may see an interesting Phase 2 this year. Since MANY students are applying to more than 20 sites (some to 40!!!), the top sites are being overwhelmed by a number of applications and qualified candidates. I bet that these same Tier 1 students will get a lot of interviews, but they will match to only 1 site, which means that possibly there will be plentiful positions unfilled. I predict that we will have many prestigious sities participating in Phase 2. Please refute my hypothesis.

After a couple of years ago, following a big jump in the number of internship slots, a lot of sites changed their interview and ranking procedures to avoid the Phase II scramble. I don't think we'll see that again anytime soon. There will be quality sites in Phase II, but nothing like a couple of years ago.

Has anyone heard from Lenox Hill, Columbia NYP Irving Medical Center, Lincoln Hospital, or Rutgers Behavioral Health in Newark, or Mt. Sinai Elmhurst? I know someone on Monday said they got a phone call from Lincoln but I'm wondering if anyone has anything more recent than that. Thank you and good luck to all.
I received an interview invite for Rutgers Behavioral Health in Newark on 11/24. I applied to the adult corrections track, so I'm not sure if that matters, but the email didn't include the specific track and seemed to be a mass email despite being addressed to me. They only offered one interview date of 12/16 which is odd since their APPIC page says their notification date is 12/20... 🤷‍♀️

I'm sure 40 applications is an outlier, to me, it is unlikely that one is a great fit for 40 sites. The link indicates the range of applications from phase I of last year. You will see the range is 1 to 68 for number of applications, yes 68! There are outliers every year.

I think this sums up what at least some of us are feeling

I'm waiting on Lenox Hill, Columbia, and Elmhurst. I know people who have heard from/already interviewed at Columbia but do not know anyone who has heard from the other two.

Have you heard about people for the Columbia Child Track and Adult Track? I only saw Adult Track, but have not heard anything about Child...thanks for any insight you may have!

Does anyone have thoughts on sites that are not APA accredited but have a site visit planned?

Rolling the dice. If it's a VA, much better chance that the accreditation will happen. They usually are not allowed to even initiate the process until everything has been up and running smoothly.

I am also waiting to hear from Columbia NYP Irving Medical Center, however, I have friends who did receive interviews already, so idk if to just expect a rejection sometime soon. I haven't hear from Mt. Sinai Elmhurst yet either, I think their notification deadline date is 12/18. I received an invite from Rutgers behavioral health in Newark on 12/4. Hope that helps, good luck to you!!

Just a reminder: If a program decides you are not a good fit for their internship program, it doesn’t generalize to being not a good psychologist, not a good future postdoc applicant, or not a not a good intern for more “competitive” sites.

Sometimes we read great applications and say “we have nothing to teach this student; They already have great training in our areas of emphasis. This wouldn’t be a growth site for them.”

I vote all rejections start saying this!

Any advice on what you’d “rank” higher APA on contingency vs APA on probation?

I think APA on contingency is much better than APA on probation. Contingency could just mean they are a newer program and don't have the data yet for 2 full cohort years. I think probation means they were accredited and then did something that fell below standards

wow they should really cap internship applications...40 is NUTS

Well, they attempted a soft cap by raising the cost per application above 15. I wouldn't worry too much. I'd say the vast majority of people are still in the 12-18 range of applications, like always. Also, the people applying to 40 sites, are most likely not strong applicants.

I don't really know anything about probation, but it sounds like on contingency is just as safe as full accreditation in terms of any risk to applicants/students. I would just make sure any site visits are scheduled for after your start date. If they fail to get full accreditation or withdraw while you are there, you will still be considered to have completed a fully accredited internship (this is according the APA website).

This is really helpful; thanks for sharing! Out of curiosity, was your Rutgers invitation for the Child track?

Agree. And, there are most always very competitive sites in Phase II. Hang in there.

Where is this on the website? I am
not sure this is correct.

"If you complete a program that is recognized as “accredited, on contingency” effective before your graduation date, you will have completed an APA accredited program. Accreditation is effective as of the date of adjournment of the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) meeting in which the decision was made."

This could just be me, but I like to personalize them, include specifics from our conversations, and definitely show my interest and excitement about their site if I truly think it is a good fit! If it's not a good fit, maybe keeping it more simple?
Thank you for the insight!!

I know someone else already shared the text, but here's to link too:

Official Site Name: Atlanta VA
Date Invitation Received: 12/10
Method of Invitation (Phone call, personal/mass email, Snapchat): Unsure, though it seems like a personal email? (apparently they had trouble with sending it through AAPI for some people)
Specialty Track or Site (e.g., for consortiums): General
Interview Dates Offered: January 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th
(In honor of years past) If & How you're staying sane: Video games, and binge-watching West Wing (I know I'm late to the party on this one)

Note: The TD expressed that this was a second attempt to reach out, as the first one was a mass email through the AAPI portal yesterday and likely had some issues. I never received the original email, either in inbox or spam/junk, so I'm very glad they reached out again as I'm excited about my potential fit with the site!

Thank you. This makes sense. I misread what the poster was trying to say. Much appreciated!
