APPIC thread?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I submitted everything yesterday and am already checking my email every half hour. I guess I'll have to throw myself into some distracting hobbies this November.

Like dissertation? If that's not enough perhaps cleaning the baseboards and vents.

I'm in Canada and we have an official interview notification day (Dec 4). Pro: I know that I will not receive any emails before then and I don't have to obsessively check my email. Con: I may actually DIE OF ANXIETY before Dec 4 gets here.

Most of my sites say they notify on 12/1 or 12/15-literally going to go crazy between now and then!!!!

Mine say complete, and I received a submission email for each and I’m still checking that they are actually submitted. The anxiety is real!

Mine all say complete and I got a submission email from AAPI saying they'd submit my applications. No submission emails from each site yet, but maybe APPIC stopped that. I can also see that each application has been paid for and I now have a button to update submitted applications although I have no idea what I'd use that for. When I click the 'submit application' tab it now says I have 0 applications ready for submission and no pending fees, so that tells me everything was submitted. I'm just declining to stress over it. I did everything I could as early as I could and that is the best I could do.

I think that if you submitted each application separately you would have gotten separate notifications, but if you submitted them all in one go, you would only get one. I submitted mine in two batches and got separate emails each time I paid and submitted (which by the way was painful. my wallet hurts!)

Oh that makes sense. I sent them all at once before I lost my nerve hehe. When this application season is over I wonder who has the job of reviewing what worked and didn't.

Does anyone know if the application status on the AAPI will change from "complete" to "under review" or anything like that?

I'm going to guess recommenders might have something to say about getting a gazillion requests for uploading letters even though they selected "re-use for all."

Based on the AAPI help page, it seems like the status just moves from "in progress" to "received" to "complete" and then stays there.

Yet according to APPIC this changed because of complaints from letter writers in the past. Apparently some were surveyed and complained about not knowing where applicants actually sent their letters. Maybe they thought their letters were never used? Who knows. However, appeasing this complaint could have been done without sending a zillion emails.

Did everyone survive their first (perhaps only) round of submissions? APPICs latest email about the slowness of everything getting to training directors and how they have all been encouraged to contact APPIC directly with questions rather than overwhelm students was tremendously helpful. Also DCTs are only getting one report every Saturday about what applications their students submitted, which is apparently a drastic change from what happened in prior years.

I hope everyone has increased their self-care, I know I have!

I survived, all my apps have been submitted for a little over 1-2 weeks now. Of course, some of my sites extended their deadlines and part of me wishes I could fix a couple of (minor) things, but I’m practicing letting go 😊
I don’t have much else to do to keep myself occupied, but if things stay relatively the same as last year except for sites that have extended their deadline, I should start hearing back end of next week!

Was this email sent to students? I didn’t get it 🙁

I would be happy to keep track of all of the notifications on here, as I know many have found it helpful. You can either make a post in this thread or PM me. If you PM me I will not share your username with anyone. Either way, please use the following format:

It's too early to say I've survived with so much of the process left to do lol. I have noticed sites are extending their deadlines after their due dates have passed. I wonder if they aren't getting as many applicants as they anticipated.

The APPIC email was part of the APPIC Match News which any student can sign up for and is super helpful regarding whatever late breaking info they have. The DCT info I got from my DCT who sent panicked emails to all applicants wondering if we all submitted our applications on time and to where, then sent a sheepish apology after getting their Saturday report and learning that's the new system.

I think sites are extending deadlines for several reasons: fewer applicants than expected, everyone's confusion about how the heck the portal is even working, unexpected funding lines, and some students still hustling to get dissertation proposals approved. Either way I'm glad I submitted all of them early because briefly I can pretend there's nothing else to do lol.

That is what my DCT said in his forwarding of the most recent Match email.

Just curious, why do people think sites are receiving fewer applicants than normal (or is this pertaining just to specific types of sites)? I understand COVID must be a factor but I was assuming that the reduced cost of not having to travel might push people to apply to more sites on average

I’ll be interested to see if this is a national thing or just reflective of other factors (eg sites in desirable cities vs more remote areas) or just anecdotal. It will be a weird year for sure.

I wasn't sure that was the case, but I made that speculation because certain sites extended their deadlines only after their original deadlines already passed so my guess was that they would only do that if the initial applications received weren't as numerous as they planned for. My guess was about those sites in particular.

Also, there's at least one person in my cohort who decided not to apply this year because of the way the pandemic affected her hours (and one more who was on the fence but got pushed off the fence b/c of the pandemic and also decided not to apply). I would wonder if that is also happening in other cohorts but I can't be sure.

In the end, it doesn't really matter. I'm just curious about what's going on behind the scenes as we wait for notifications to come in.

I haven't kept up with the total internship spots to numbers of applicants balance but given the push to accredidate more sites following the internship imbalance of some years ago, I wonder if there are also just way more options out there for everybody.

If I’m remembering correctly from the last couple of emails we got, sites were extending deadlines due to some applicants having issues with the portal/submitting applications. Not sure if there would be such a huge difference this year in terms of overall less applications (either students applying to less places or less students applying this cycle). The numbers next summer/fall will show if there was a national trend.

Yeah that all makes sense. Probably will be similar as years prior, just thought I was missing something. My initial concern was that there would be more applications sent out given the virtual interviews but who knows if that is the case

I applied to Butner, Springfield, and Ft. Worth! Haven't heard from any of them.
I heard from Fort Worth on Friday via email.

Did you apply to other BOP’s?! I am wondering if other sites have sent out their invites today as well? Such as Allenwood, Butner, MDC-LÁ! :nailbiting:
I know Allenwood sent out some on Friday. I did not apply there but two of my cohort members did. I heard from MDC-LA on Friday as well, via email. So far no one I know has heard from Butner or Devens.

What thread?

Amazing, thank you!

Later that morning I got the notification for Allenwood!

hoping this next week to hear about Butner!

Cool to have the notifications start rolling in this early in November!

Anyone else having several issues with the APPIC site for application submissions???? I literally keep encountering errors where all the sudden all my materials will disappear and it's always when I want to go into to submit :eyebrow:

In addition to the hours concern deterring some potential applicants, those who are also immuno-compromised may be deterred from applying completely or applying to certain sites since it is clear COVID is not going away. There also isn't much chatter about how immuno-compromised mental health professionals are navigating work sites so without a sense of what an intern year might look like I get the appeal of delaying.

So stressful! I had this problem about a week ago. I completely logged out of the AAPI account, used a different browser and the problem was fixed. I hope this helps.

Got an email from California Pacific Medical Center this morning to inform me that they will not be continuing their Neuropsych track for the 2021-2022 internship year. Not exactly the message I wanted to receive. I really hope this doesn't become a trend with neuropsych placements/tracks!

I'm so sorry! I sincerely hope that is not a trend as well. Thank you for the update.

That is unfortunate, but not altogether unexpected. Neuro is more affected by virtual visits than general therapy services. Also, many of us have a lot fewer followups now. I've crossed more people off my Retest/follow up list in the past 7 months due to COVID deaths than I have in the past several years combined.

Super important and it’s not talked about enough (then again, neither is disability as a whole)! I’m immunocompromised and it didn’t deter me from applying to internship (I wouldn’t have a reason or finding to stay in my program an extra year anyway), it made me look at sites more closely. From whether they changed interviews to virtual to how they’ve protected the well-being of 2019-2020 and the 2020-2021 interns. It didn’t impact the overall #of sites or the type of sites I applied to but I certainly scrutinized more. I’m lucky that my current practicum was accommodating and I was able to stop in-person for the time being, but everyone isn’t so lucky. I am concerned about internship overall in this regard, but it seems like some sites that were already set up for telepsych had a much easier transition. It’s more so a matter of red tape in whether they deem you compromised enough to get accommodations 🙄
