Okay, so I like numbers. I know this is probably guarded information that many programs don't like to discuss, but I think it's worth a discussion on this forum of neurotic applicants (myself included). Anyone have either firsthand data or speculation on the number of applicants for each program, the number they interview, or how many they end up ranking? I'm guessing its in the range of 400/100/50... give or take several hundred. feel free to chime in with unfounded and totally biased answers.

With it now being electronic, everyone can apply to everywhere, so the numbers are REALLY up. The only true "rule of thumb" is: interview 8-10 for every position you have, and go up if you've had problems in the past. Places that don't do 8/1 for interviews to spots do so at the peril of not filling. At the same time, PDs rave amongst themselves about 1. where their residents went to med school and 2. how far down the rank list they had to go (or didn't) to fill.

I would tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.

The other med students might take that as a victory that increases their odds of matching. 😀

We had over 200 applicants this year (not bad for our first year using ERAS)

About 80 have been granted interviews.

I'm not sure how many we'll rank, but typically it's 20-40

We have 8 spots.

Does anyone know how to interpret the numbers on FREIDA? Many programs list how many interviews they conducted last year, which you can divide by how many spots they had last year to come up with interviews/spot. It seems to range from about 5 to about 20, at least for the programs I looked at that published that number. Given that unfilled positions are now a rarity, I am assuming that everybody is filling all of their spots with the people they interview (or at least have reasonable expectation of doing that), so does that mean the places interviewing fewer people are more competitive? The key missing data point is that we don't know how many qualified applicants each program is getting. Also, maybe doing interviews/spot is unfair: Emory interviewed 140 applicants for 18 spots last year, but one wonders if they would have interviewed the same number of people if they only had 12 spots -- those were just the qualified applications they got.

Is there any place where one can get data on how many applications programs are receiving? I figure that number lies between 100 and 1000 for any given program, but that's too big of a range.

Where is this info on FRIEDA? I don't see # interviewed/ranked.

It would be interesting to know how many applications EM programs are getting this year as compared to last.

It may be a way to gauge how competitive EM may be this year compared to last years record numbers...although I have a strong feeling that the numbers of applications will be relatively the same for most programs.

Not to single out Emory again, but here are the relevant portions of their FREIDA listing:
