G'day SDN!!

I have been a long time visitor to this site, often brought here by google searches. Previously I had always managed to find someone else had asked my same question before & been answered. My searching has not yielded the clear answer I seek on this day, & so, I have finally registered for SDN so that I may directly pose my own questions to the collective, all-knowing mind that is the internet.

I attended my first year of college at a state school in Denver, CO. At the time I lived about 40min away from that school (& at least 10min or so from anything else, for that matter). I had no car. My big sissy, attending the same school, was my ride. Naturally, it was my responsibility to make my class schedule match hers, so as not to leave neither her nor I sitting around bored waiting for the other. During my second semester, I failed to fulfill this responsibility by taking one class more than her, a course titled College Algebra, which would keep us on campus two hours later, two days per week. My sister wasn't thrilled about it, but agreed it was okay. However, she warned me that it was possible her work schedule would change to require her to go in during than time, & so it did. This meant I would not be able to attend the class any longer. I withdrew from the class on the very last day to get a NC withdrawal, & for that I am grateful.

I have been assuming this would not affect my GPA as calculated by AMCAS. When asked about it, I could simply explain then as I have for you now. I had thought it was a blessing to drop it in time to get the NC rather than an F, but it has come to my attention that AMCAS might count them as the same?? If so, this is a significantly blow to my GPA (& science/math GPA).

Resuming my story, after my second semester, I moved from CO to CA, transferred schools, & took a semester off in-between. At my second school, I was given a math placement test, which decided I should take Calculus I (despite the fact that everything I knew about trigonometry I made up while taking the test). I did as the test prescribed, & passed with a B+.

I'm sure this situation is quite mitigating, provided I get the chance to explain it, but my concerns lie with my stats, which will play their role even before I will be granted the opportunity to explain. If it is not counted, my stats thus far are quite acceptable for a med school matriculant (3.719 total GPA, 3.586 sGPA). If it is counted they are not (3.571/3.372).

TL;DR:
Does an NC on a transcript affect GPA as considered by AMCAS?? & if so, if a higher level, same-subject course were passed later with an acceptable grade, would that likely mitigate the detriment of the NC upon application review??

It seems that the NC grades that you see on the AMCAS grade conversion chart are different from an NC grade that is taken as part of a C/NC option.

I recently contacted AMCAS with this question and I was informed that an NC grade only counts as an F in your AMCAS gpa if your school weighs it as a failing grade. In other words, if it didn't impact your school's gpa, then it shouldn't impact your AMCAS gpa.
