I am in the process of applying to UPenn and BU 😕. However, I am getting a little concerned about the questions in the applications.

For eg. for UPenn, they want to know my professional experience and my future goals. I was wondering if I should write it as a few bullet points or should I try to narrate a story. It seems that the links in this website refer to applications for MBAs and other degrees where a narrative might be more appropriate.

I want to pick the minds of those who have successfully applied to these schools (or for that matter other schools) on the appropriate way to answer these questions.

Also, regarding the finance question. Should I show that I have necessary funds to pay for the school or should I say that I will be taking loans. If I can somehow show that I have the necessary funds, will it not ruin any chance I might have of getting a scholarship (down the road).

I haven't "successfully" applied to school yet, but...... I could tell you that bullet points are good if you have a lot to say, and want to condense it in a few lines. While if you don't have that much to write about, you could narrate a story, and kind of "conceal" that little information into the story, making look like if it was longer.

But remember, AdComs are pretty good at reading this, so try not to get repetitive.

Are you applying to Advanced Placement? 'cause I don't think there are that many scholarships towards this program. Unless you are an US legal resident, and try to get a grant or something.

Actually, you should make this question in the Financial Aid forum. They've got great people there, check it out.

EDIT: about the essays. Search Google.com. I found great templates there.

Thanks for the advice. My husband has an MBA and he was recommending that I write a story, like he did a few years back. I personally think that the essays should be direct and to the point.

Just to clarify the financial aid question in my previous post. I am a perm. resident (g'card), and therefore might be eligible for loans and scholarships (assuming there are a few available).

That brings me to my next question. I would like to get a Stafford loan, but it seems that it is need based. Since my husband filed a joint tax return for 2002, it could potentially preclude me from being eligible for the loan. Has anyone come accross the same issue?

The financial aid forum did not directly address this issue.

Thanks in advance.
