As most of us know, this process is a money drain. From the dozens of primaries and secondaries to travel and hotel costs for interviews. I think it would be great if we had a thread where we all shared different tips and ideas on how to save money, specifically for the costs associated with interviews since primaries and secondaries are pretty rigid.

To get the ball rolling, I recall reading something about how to save on flight costs by racking up airline miles through credit cards or something like that. Anyone know the specifics of this one?

For me, I use price comparison websites like Kayak, Priceline, and CheapOAir. You can research flights, hotels, and car rentals. They usually have pretty good deals. It is also a good idea to check the school's website. Some schools work with local hotels and can provide discounts for their applicants.

Grab a credit card witih some free points/flights if you spend a lot of cash in 3-5 months..I just picked up a Citi AAadvantage with spend 3k get $600 in flights

For the interviews that you drive to, see if you can carpool with someone. Especially if you go to a school with many pre-meds there is a chance you can arrange that with a classmate. Of course, it does depend on timing, meaning you both need to have interviews to the same place at the same time, etc, but it's worth keeping an eye out for

I just got the Chase Freedom Unlimited. They have a special going on where you get $100 if you spend $500 in the first three months (very easy to do with secondaries). Also you get 1.5% cash back on all purchases, which can add up. I got this instead of an airline card because I would rather have the flexibility to choose what to do with my rewards.

Normally I would too, but if I have success I will literally need money for flying for these interviews.

Some med schools facilitate lodging with a current med student so you can avoid hotel charges, which is great if you don't mind sleeping on a sofa.

Get the southwest plus Visa card and get 50,000 bonus points after spending a certain amount, wait a month get the southwest premier Visa card, spend some more and get another 50,000 bonus points. Then spend a few thousand more and get a total of 110,000 points and you get a free companion pass. Anyone you choose can fly for free with you on southwest for the rest of the year and the following year.

More of a sweet deal if you have a spouse that could travel the county with you for interviews.
