Hi Everyone,

I was just introduced to this website recently, and I am so thankful to my friend. There is so much advice available, and I have many questions! 🙂

I am interested in completing my MPH prior to med school. How does the application process work? What are general deadlines? If I take the MCAT (since I will applying to med school), do I still have to take the GRE when applying for MPH? What are things that I should think about when applying?

I hope that my questions can be answered. :luck:

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

The schools I applied to when I went through the application process had deadlines of Feb. 1, but this can vary by the school so check their websites to be sure.

Many schools will require you to take the GRE and will not accept the MCAT, although some will. Again, you'll have to start researching the schools you are interested in applying to.

You will need to think about why you are interested in public health for your personal statement. Consider the cost of the programs. You will not want a ton of debt following you to medical school accumulating interest so you will want to explore the state funded schools wherever you live. One thing to consider is that the MPH will not really help you in the medical school application process unless you really want to do public health as a M.D. (be prepared to talk about this in interviews because I was asked why I did the MPH first every single time). If you need to improve your grades, go for a M.S. instead. Consider the public health opportunities in the area of the school. Try to enter a smaller program because it will get you more personal attention which possibly means better LORs.

Hihi!

One more thing to add to this post - well, two actually.

1) There is no centraliazed application service for public health schools (although I have heard there might be one soon). That being said, each application has to be completely gathered and submitted by you. Most of them also require that you submit the letters of recommendation yourself (after getting them back from your references). Allow plenty of time for this when you apply.

2) Apply early! Schools are mostly on a rolling admissions process, so the sooner you apply, the better your chances are. Good luck!
