This is my first time applying to vet school. I'm a non-traditional student that has spent the last 4 years working on my prerequisite classes. I spent 13 years working as a legal secretary and paralegal before deciding to return to veterinary medicine.

After an agonizing 2 hours entering all my previous coursework (and kicking myself for being a slacker at 21), I've reached the part of the application where they want to know about my "leadership roles and responsibilities"... I'm unsure what to put here. I was never a club president, I haven't been a supervisor in my jobs so to speak, but I was trusted and responsible for working on patent applications for multi-million dollar companies.

Should I enter my work history in this section? Should I mention the fact that I maintained a mortgage and a household for nearly 20 years? I mean if that's not responsibility what is?

Just not sure what I should list ....any guidance from any other non-trads would be greatly appreciated.

Never mind...I just saw the next section titled "employment" ... I'm tired. Sorry guys. This application is going to cause me to start ripping out handfuls of hair... why oh WHY does Texas have to be special with their OWN application system?!?!?! I'm so NOT looking forward to doing all this work over again on the VMCAS.

Not a non-trad grad, but I would say no to the mortgage/household idea 😛

Have you ever trained anyone? Been the head of a patent application or all applications from a certain company? (I'm not sure how those work). If you've ever trained a new hire, that's definitely leadership if you ask me. And being trusted with everything from one company is responsibility/leadership.

Also, I think the "use your best judgement" phrase comes into play here. You don't want to stretch the truth, but you don't want to undersell yourself either.

Just a tidbit here: if you're getting really tired you should take a break/leave it until tomorrow. The parts of my application that I did when I was really tired ended up looking like garbage and I ended up re-writing it anyway. Unless your application is due tomorrow, do it in little pieces and take your time 🙂
