Application Review After Getting Into Vet School?

Would you guys request for an application review AFTER getting into Vet School?

It is obvious that if you didn't get into ANY school, then you would request for an application review. In my case, I got into one vet school and got rejected from 3 vet schools, post interview. I want to find out what I messed up on during the interview and how I can improve myself during interviews! Am I being reasonable or am I just crazy? If I were to call for an application review, is it a waste of the reviewer's time? I am totally serious about improving myself by learning from my mistakes.

Has any of you filed for an application review AFTER getting into vet school? Any opinions or thoughts are much appreciated. 🙂

I met with one of my interviewers to ask for feedback on my interviewing skills after getting into school. She seemed quite willing to meet with me.

So obviously I don't think it's unreasonable. Just be ... yanno ... grateful for the time that they give you, if you do it.

I think you are being reasonable. I have been accepted but am still waiting on two schools and if I don't get an acceptance from one or both of them I would like to know why. I think it is more of a curiosity thing for me though. But improving on future interviews is an excellent point.

Lol, not crazy. I totally tried to ask UPenn why they rejected me and they were all snippy about it. "All we can say is that you were under consideration for an interview." No, really, I wanted to know why! Hahaha.

I don't see any harm in it. I had gotten into 3 other schools and was going to one of them when I called to do a file review with Penn because I had been waitlisted before and was curious as to what went wrong, because like you, I'd want to learn from what happened. Setting up a review ended with my application becoming re-evaluated and I was offered an acceptance. Obviously this isn't a common occurrence , but good does come out of it (whether it's a status change like that or just figuring out things you need to work on). Never really found out anything specifically that I did wrong though....just that there seemed to be a miscommunication somewhere along the lines.

Personally I would take the acceptance and never look back, but that's just me. I'm pretty sure the schools that rejected you don't know that you got in elsewhere unless you tell them, so I would be cautious of saying something like "oh, I don't plan on applying here again, I was just curious" or else they might feel like you are wasting their time. They might be understanding, but I would guess you'd get more thoughtful/helpful feedback if they thought you were interested in applying again.

Also I wouldn't assume that just because you made it to the interview stage, your rejection had something to do with your interview. Most schools still look at your application as a whole when making final admissions decisions. It might be that your interview was great, but there were so many people with great stats and interviews that you just didn't make the cut for some other reason.

Yep, last year I actually went and did a review with three schools after I was accepted to other programs and had sent in a deposit. In both reviews we went through all of my application and then once we were done, I finally mentioned that I was planning to attend elsewhere and wouldn't be reapplying, but that I wanted to know about their transfer process and what I could improve if I wanted to apply for that. The reviewers were all really nice, and weren't offended at all when I mentioned it and congratulated me. I was legitimately curious about the transfer process too in case I was unhappy with my choice of attendance (which I'm not - I love it here and don't intend to leave!). And I just reeeally wanted to know why I'd been rejected, haha. Turned out I was right about what the weak point in my application was for two schools, but Penn did surprise me with some of their comments so I thought it was beneficial.

If you don't want to discuss the transfer process, you probably wouldn't even need to bring up the fact that you're attending elsewhere (I don't recall either reviewer directly asking me if I was planning to reapply), but if it comes up, you could just say you're interested in reapplication if you're uncomfortable discussing it.

You made an excellent point about how the decisions aren't solely based on interviews. However, if I really had bombed my interview, I think I would like to know that for future purposes. I can't really change anything else about me such as my GPA, GRE, and experiences but I thought that getting feedback from my interview would be something useful for my future! But I agree with you that if they find out that I already got in, then they might not be as helpful.

I think it's fine to request a file review even though you were admitted elsewhere. I plan on doing exactly that for the one school where I wasn't admitted/waitlisted this cycle. For me it's more of a morbid curiosity, but regardless of the reason I think I can be a valuable learning experience!

I had just found out I got into an OOS school and informed the admissions counselor that I had been accepted elsewhere, but I just wanted to discuss my application and if I had a chance of getting called off. Honestly it really wasn't that helpful for me in terms of areas I could have improved. I guess I did great in the interview, but my GPA is what made it hard for me to get in (it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great). But trying to fix a cGPA when you have a degree already, is an up-hill battle (but my last 45 gpa was around 3.7) It was helpful in the decision that if I did get off the waitlist (which I did) that I would never go to that school. The admission counselor was rather condescending and told me I was lucky that I even got an interview because I barely made the cut and while I was put on the waitlist I should be thankful that I even made it that high or low into the waitlist to maybe get called off. I don't know if it was because she was in a bad mood or upset that I wanted to discuss my application/odds even though I already had an acceptance.

Long story short, just ask for a file review and even if their rude about it don't take personal offense.

What?! Your story is crazy. May I ask which school you are talking about? So you turned down instate tuition because of the counselor?! And plus your GPA is very high... so I don't really believe her that you got lucky!

My last 45 GPA was high, my cumulative GPA was not. My IS school is one of those expensive ones and going OOS was actually about the same price. I don't regret my decision to come to Iowa.

For all these file reviews, did you guys just discuss via email or did you travel far to meet? I'm curious about my rejections/waitlistings but I'm not gonna fly across the country to see why someone hates me lol. Is asking via email appropriate?

Most schools offer file reviews by phone as well as in person. Setting it up over email is perfectly fine.

I did. And it was really just curiosity - or maybe a "how could you reject me hubris".

File reviews are available for any applicant. No reason not to try. And you can just say you may be interested in re-applying there. That is good enough.
