The company at which I am a research associate just received a $2.5 million grant for research on a malaria vaccine. I believe we will also be receiving a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation for similar purposes in the very near future. Are these things worth updating schools about pre-interview? Also, if so, how do I go about doing this?

Did you have any part in securing these funds? If no, do not update them.
If you had a major role in securing these funds, then yeah, I can see this as an update if you can talk about your role.
If its somewhere in between it may be questionable.

Updates are helpful as an excuse to tell the school how amazing they are. If you think your work contributed to the grant, definitely send something to the school.

Updates, for the most part, are only potentially useful after you have cleared screening and are invited for an interview.
