If it's a school that encourages updates, I'd do ahead and do it. I don't think it can hurt--at worst, it'll be disregarded IMO.
What I did with such letters was a 5 (short) paragraph format--no more than one page.
1. Intro: why I'm writing this letter
2.-4. Updates: one per paragraph
5. Conclusion: mention (briefly) why I'm a fit for their school.
Disclaimer: I've only sent these as post II updates!
