So, I applied in 2007 in Texas and got interviews everywhere. I was accepted to UTMB pre-match but it turned out I couldn't go due to family problems and so I deferred a year, then still couldn't go. I never took anyone's spot though, I just didn't matriculate and start school. I was living abroad for a few years after that studying meditation and Chinese medicine and now I'm back in Texas applying to schools again as in in-state resident. I just found out UTMB isn't interested in me anymore due to my not going back then, which was pretty sad to hear, but understandable. I had a 33R MCAT back then and I have a 30R now. I don't know my exact GPA. My science classes were 4.0, my Chinese B.A. was 3.9 and my Business B.A. was about 3.45. I have a masters from Harvard in Asian Studies with a GPA of 3.4ish. I speak a few languages, I've traveled to many countries, studied abroad, I've done some observerships, I've had a little research experience + 1 publication, but I'm 31 years old now and I have that messy past problem with not going to UTMB. Anyone think I'm just totally screwed? I know I can't change my application now, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for Nov 1st or later schools that I should add to my AMCAS application or if I should just find a new career? No interviews yet in Texas. AMCAS app verified this morning. University of Alabama chances?

I'm really sorry to hear about your situation...life doesn't always go the way we want it to.. 🙁

But I'm not sure I understand your current situation. So did you already apply this cycle and are just looking to add more schools before Nov 1st? If so, I honestly wouldn't this late in the game. I personally think it's just a waste of time and schools--which you could probably apply to next year (in case you don't get in this year) with a much better chance.

And if you didn't apply this year, I would just wait until next May when you can submit your TMDSAS on the first day. Also, if you haven't already, I would talk to UTMB admissions to see if there's anything you can/should do to improve your chances there, especially since you had an extenuating circumstance preventing your matriculation in the first place. And in the meantime, you can take on some meaningful clinical/teaching/work/etc. opportunities?

Just my two cents...Good luck!

I applied to TMDSAS on the time this year already. I also applied to some AMCAS schools. I just recently heard about the NO THANKS from UTMB so that's why I was thinking I would add AMCAS schools. I'm working in a pediatric clinic now as an MA and I'm doing observerships also. I asked UTMB how to make my application look better last year before applications, but they still said no thanks after taking their recommendations. Therefore, I'm trying to think about what schools I should add.

Thanks for your kind words!

That honestly really sucks...Really sorry to hear it...Hopefully it happened for the best though. But I think I'd still lean toward my initial opinion--not to add anymore schools at this point. It's just very late to do that right now, and unfortunately, given the drop in your MCAT score, I'm not sure you'd be looked at very favorably this late in the game. Personally, I'd just wait it out, continue (and develop upon) my activities, send letters of interest and update letters where applicable, and hope for the best. In case things don't work out this cycle, I would much rather apply to different schools next cycle as a "new" applicant than a reapplicant, in which case my chances would already be reduced.

Maybe others can chime in and provide some more useful feedback..

Really hope it works out for you though! Good luck!
