I applied this past cycle, the result was one interview and 24 rejections. I'm pretty sure that this was partially due to my timing, I submitted my AMCAS application Oct 15, it wasn't verified until Nov 15, and I was still completing secondaries in January. I really didn't know what to expect in the process and have since learned, I've submitted my application early and it was verified on June 30th. I'm also applying to osteopathic med schools as "backup."
My stats are:
3.37 gpa
3.09 gpa sci, due to one explanable F in calculus my freshman year, I retook the course and got an A the next term
29 N MCAT: VR 10, BS 10, PS 9, WS N

I've chosen the schools below already -
Allopathic Schools:
Albany Med
Creighton
Drexel
EVMS
Jefferson Med
MCO
MCW
MSU/CHM
NYMC
Penn State
Chicago Medical
UVM
UMDNJ - New Jersey Med
University of Cincinnati
University of Illinois at Chicago
VCU
Wayne State

Osteopathic Schools:
KCOM
CCOM
MSU COM
AZCOM
NYCOM
PCOM
TUCOM
UMDNJ - School of Osteopathic Medicine
UNECOM
WUHS/COMP

Although I've already submitted my application, I keep wondering if I should have applied to other allopathic schools like Temple or one of the SUNYs. Could you give me your opinion?
Thanks in advance!

i know the title of the thread probably wasn't the best and the post was a little long, but i'd really appreciate some advice...please!?

TIA

hope you get in.

temple, vermont, bu, tufts, howard, slu, morehouse, meharry, ponce, del caribe, etc.

Is there a time penalty for adding more schools to the AMCAS application? Should I add temple and tufts? are the SUNYs, esp downstate, buffalo, or upstate even a shot considering i'm out of state (cali resident)? Although I did my undergrad in NY state and will possibly spend from sept to entering med school working and living in NY

Add Des Moines University to your Osteopathic list.

Try applying to all the schools in your state, your legal resident state. Some private schools and some state support schools out of state that have average MCAT scores close to yours.

I think you should add Temple, Tufts, and Finch. I had similar stats as you with a higher gpa. I was accepted to Temple and received an interview at Tufts. I think it won't help that much to apply to the SUNYs since you are not a NY resident.

To add schools you would go to your AMCAS application, add the schools, and pay $30 for each school added. You don't have to wait to be verified again and your added schools will get your application in about a week. I know because I did this and it was fine.

I think with your stats and since you are applying early, you should get in somewhere particularly a DO school. I just hope that if it does turn out that you only get into a DO school and not an MD school, you have no qualms about it and attend. 👍

OP-

Ummm...okay. Let me try this one.

I'd do the SUNYs if I were you, especially Upstate. I think some of the other recommendations were sensible too, like BU and Vermont and Temple. So that answers your questions. DO schools were a good choice too.

Now. Timing may have partially been an issue the first time around, but I dare say the science GPA could have been an issue too. What are your ECs like? Where did you do undergrad at? Finally, did you ever contact any of the schools as to what on your application they felt was a stumbling block to your admission? If you really want an MD, and if 24 of the 24 schools say your science GPA was the factor, maybe a post bacc/grad year to bring those numbers up would help the overall case.

Good luck either way.
