Hi, I had a question about applications.

So I am scheduled to take the MCAT in July. However, I was under the impression that I should submit the application ASAP in june, and it takes 6-8 weeks to verify (and just apply to like 1 school so it goes through) and to add schools after taking the MCAT and getting scores. Is that right? How long after getting my scores if I applied to more schools, would it take to get verified and complete? or would it be better to just apply to all i would have no matter what and a few more just in case in june and add more as i see fit in august when i get my scores????!!

This is good info that I would like to know as well. Any experts at applying to med school want to help explain further?

I would like to know this as well. I was just under the impression that you should apply to all schools, and then update when scores come in. Is there any reason not to approach this way?

Isn't it more expensive if you add schools after the submission? I remember hearing that last year but I'm not sure.

I would just submit to all schools the earliest you can, you really want to have an early application. Let's say you submit June 1st, ideally you would have your scores in by August or so? In the meantime you could be doing all your secondaries (they'll be up on SDN) so once you update AACOMAS with the scores, and get secondaries from schools, you can just send them in right away and be complete.

I just feel like if you wait to submit in August, then take 6-8 weeks (more people are applying now so it might take longer) to get verified, and then send in secondaries you might not be complete until much later.

Also, I'm by no means an expert, this is just my opinion from what I've read around here, in the end you just want to have your app in as early as possible :luck:

i thought if you just apply to one school u are verified in 6-8 weeks, and that it doesnt take 6-8 more weeks when u add another school, no? but what would be the point of getting the secondaries if you wont apply to a certain school anyway after getting the scores back, you would waste the money for primary app to that school right?

:luck:
It's more expensive for the 1st school that you add (I think $12 more but not a 100% sure), but all of the additional schools after that are the same price.

Thanks emtthink, I just saw that. I don't know why I thought it was $50 for each additional school.

Melomare17: I see what you mean now, yeah in that case you're fine. I was thinking waiting to apply now vs waiting to apply after mcat scores, and I also thought it was more expensive, but emtthink cleared that up.

I think the applying to one school is much better idea now actually, at least when you get your scores you'll know for sure where to apply, and when I mentioned the secondary thing I meant doing the ones only for the schools you're interested in so you have a fast turnaround.

I have a friend who is 3rd year med student at MCV/VCU. He told me to go ahead and apply to all my schools asap and indicate when I will be taking the mcats on the application. This way the schools will start reviewing your application and will also know when to expect your mcat scores which is usually 3 weeks after you take it.
Basically, the sooner the better 😀

I took my MCAT in the first week of August when I applied. I filled out AACOMAS in October. My stats are hardly special. I was verified around the end of November, I only applied to 3 schools.

All 3 sent me secondaries almost as soon as I was verified (save LMU, if you're applying there see the last paragraph.)

End of story, I took my MCAT LATE, I applied even later, I was accepted.

LMUDCOM: If you're applying here, the 2ndary was online, no clue if they've changed it. They actually encouraged prospective students to fill it out AS SOON AS you submitted AACOMAS, and then once you were verified, you were already in their system, and they were ready to contact you immediately.

I did the same, secondaries weren't submitted till December. I was accepted!

I'd never counsel someone to apply late, but if you submit in July when your scores arrive, you really aren't considered late. The timing of your app won't be what keeps you out of medical school.
