  1. Attending Physician
I am in the military, working off my GMO obligation. I am interested in doing a peds residency after my Army commitment is over in June 2014. Will part of my transitional intern year count towards a peds internship? Will I be applying as an R1 or R2?
Thanks in advance!

Credit for Previous Training
A physician transferring to pediatric residency training from another accredited residency (eg, family medicine, internal medicine, transitional year) must correspond with the ABP to determine whether partial credit may be awarded for this training. Credit is usually applied to the PL-1 year of training. Requests for credit must be submitted either by the candidate or the pediatric residency program director before the candidate enters pediatric residency training.

Some degree of advanced standing may be granted toward your PL-1 (the standing for which you will be applying; not PL-2). The issues are how many rotations during your transitional year were pediatric or applicable to a pediatrcs residency and how long ago did you do them (presumable 4 years by the time you start residency). The ABP isn't very specific about how much advanced standing they will give or if there are time limits. The one person I knew you got some advanced standing (from an osteopathic TRI) got to start his residency two months late (this was in a milmed peds residency). I would start by calling the ABP and asking.
