I applied to dental school for admittance in the fall of 2004. I was waitlisted at 3 schools and did not apply again for admittance this fall. I want to reapply this May with new DAT scores of AA=20 and PAT=17, GPA (Chemistry Major) 3.62. I have been emloyed full time after graduation at a pharmaceutical company in an analytical lab. The only difference on my application is going to be my new DAT score in the AA section from a 17 to a 20. Any opinions on if this boost in my DAT score will be enough for admittance or if I should give up on the dream and continue on another path? Also, does anyone have any advice on how to go about explaining that this is my second time applying?

I don't think there is any explanation necessary! You obviously worked hard to get that score of 20. I have been working for about 3 years now after college and no one in the ADCOMs saw that as anything less than a positive.

The DAT and GPA are the most important factors to Admissions Committees. Last time you got waitlisted since 17 was a mediocre score (about 50%-ile). This time you scored a 20 which is a very high score (90-95%-ile). You are sure to get in to lots of good schools--especially with your GPA. Just apply early. Good luck!

looks like u can be a very strong applicant. 3.6 and 20AA full time job, looks good to me
get a new pesonal statment that explains a bit of your come back and show maturity-- dont give up your dream. it is a little weird to read this from someone with your stats becuase usually, it is more like the under3.0 club people that would write something like that.
probably it is all due to the fact that it has gotten so much harder to get it to dschool in the last couple of years

good luck

if you dont mind telling.. how many schools did you apply to last time? and what schools?

I applied to 5 Schools U Co (denied), U Iowa (denied), U mich (waitlisted), U MN (waitlisted), Marquette (waitlisted). (I was a WI resident at the time of application) Then ultimately denied by all, it was quite disheartening.

I think you problem was that you applied to state schools.

Try throwing in some private schools and you should get some much better results. You have awesome numbers, so I think you will definitely make it in somewhere for the next fall. Good luck!

I agree. You just applied to some state schools you didn't have a very high chance of getting into. Apply to your state school and some of the others that take decent numbers of out of staters (Louisville, Maryland, VCU, and Indiana come to mind) and a bunch of the privates and you should be well on your way to matriculation. Your stats are solid. Congrats on staying committed and good luck!!! 👍

is 3.62 your cumulative or is it cumualative or science?

That is my cumulative. I'm not sure what my science GPA will be, but since my major was Chemistry the majority of my classes were science so it should be rather similar... I'm sure it is not less than a 3.5, maybe as high as 3.7. I will find out when I fill out the AADSAS again.

I'm in the same shoes as you...I'm waitlisted at three schools and got a 17 on my DAT...how did you study to get your DAT up to a 20? I really need advice on how to do that...I also plan on applying earlier this year. thanks.

I think the difference between 17 and 20 is huge. 17AA isn't going to cut the mustard these days. You're in good shape.
