Hello,

I am a recent DO grad and am currently doing a traditional rotating internship as I was pretty undecided about which field I wanted to pursue. However, I am now on a PM and R rotation during my elective month and enjoying it. I am certain that this is the field that I want to perform for the rest of my life. But, I am uncertain about how most PM and R residency positions work. As I understand it, the match for this year will be for PGY 2 2007 positions. Since I will finish my internship this year and be a PGY 2 next July, would I have to hopefully fill a PGY 2 2007 spot and take a year off to do research or something? Or are there certain programs that will accept people in my position that keep some PGY 2 spots open? If so, which programs do that? Will I have to try to fill a current PGY 2 opening at a program that did not fill, and how would I find such open spots? Lastly, if I do have to possibly take a year off, should I just apply through the match, tell them of my situation, and plead to do research for a year? Thanks in advance.

I've known UCLA to have residents that came in as PGY2s...

That being said...based on your previous rants about:

*hating internal medicine...
*dislike seeing patients, and
*trying to act as a liason or more or less secretary between the specialists and other departments blows. I really
*do not enjoy patient care or clinic that much either.
*people bitching about depression, back pain, shoulder pain, four hundred pounders with dm and knee pain, 'it hurts all over', 'i have a shooting pain by my ankle that lasts three seconds'

I'm surprised that you'd like PM&R...

Thanks for all your help.

If I understand you correctly, you started your traditional rotating internship a few months ago and want to enter a PGY-2 slot at a PM&R program. As far as timing is concerned, you can attempt to apply to start a PGY-2 spot in 2006 and hope that either a program somehow had a dropout or a program is looking to expand. In that case, you could possibly start without taking a year off. (Btw, as an intern, I believe you can sign out of the match early.) If this doesn't work, yeah you may have to just apply for a 2007 PGY-2 spot and find something to do for a year.

Anyone else, please let me know if my information is incorrect. I'm basing this on conversations I've had with someone who has done something similiar in the past.

Digable Cat,
I was extrordinarily upset with many of the headaches of internal medicine and had some family issues going on when I had written those previous posts. They were an outlet for me to vent my frustrations at the time. That was over a year ago and I am wholeheartedly committed to medicine, have rededicated myself, and am serious dead serious about wanting to become a rehab physician.

You must have definitely been very frustrated with things to make comments about medicine and patients. However, it's good to get a fresh start and an open mind. Where did you do your rehab elective at?

Melancholy,

I was absolutely frustrated/burned out with medicine in the past, but now have matured quite a bit more, rededicated myself to this field and want to help people once again. Do you have any idea about how to find out about programs with pgy 2 open spots other than contacting them individually? Thanks.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any other way to find out about open spots or plans for expanding programs other than word of mouth and some plain old elbow grease to contact programs.
