Hello All,

I am going to be applying to DO school this spring and I've started my application. At this point I likely wont have my Letters all submitted by June 1st. Anyways, I took the MCAT for the 1st time in 2010 and got a 27 (two 10s and a 7V), my GPA is 3.6. I am planning on retaking the MCAT July 14th, and I was trying to decide whether or not I should go ahead an submit my application with my original score or wait and submit after I get my new score. My practice tests have been in the 30-33 range, and I feel like my score will be an improvement, but there is no guarantee.

I'm trying to decide whether I should go ahead and apply as early as possible and then submit my second MCAT after my scores are released, or if I should wait until my score come out and then submit my application.

I understand the significant benefit of applying early, but I don't want to mess up my chances this cycle by having a lower MCAT score. So I guess I'm trying to weigh the cost/benefits of this situation. Will schools who may have initially have passed me over then reconsider if they see a second MCAT Score? I've put my planned MCAT on the application, but I'm not sure if that information will matter at all.

Thanks, and sorry for my naivety on this subject!

your GPA is above average at most schools and your MCAT is pretty good as well. apply early and mark on the application that you are due for a retake. I think you will get many interviews even without the retake.

+1
apply early, no matter if you wait to apply next year (due to a lower score) they will see all of your scores anyway. You sound like you will have a nice improvement on your score though, so I wouldn't worry! At least have your transcripts verified, and a 27 w/ that gpa is good for DO school, so i'm sure you will be getting interviews regardless of the retake.

I made this mistake last year..

Apply June 1, your stats are already good enough to receive all secondaries. If they like the 27 they will interview you right away, if they don't, they see that you plan on taking the mcat, and they will wait until you update your score then reconsider you.

Either way, you will get your new score in Aug, so it will before any of your first interviews, so you can update the school at that point.

Applying late really kills you, I cannot stress this enough.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I definitely got my answer!

Quick question and verification, does all the EC entries (think we can add and edit more after submitting) and personal statement must be finished in order to submit? I remembered someone saying that the personal statement cannot be edit after submission. thanks

I thought you don't need your letters until secondaries?
Just for clarification, all I need is to have my letters into interfolio right? I don't have to submit any letters to AACOMAS?

agree 100000%. applying late got me landed on WLs instead of getting a seat. not trying to be conceited but i know that i would have gotten in ahead of others that have way lower stats than me

Oh if that's the case, which it sounds like it is, I'm really not familiar with this process 😛 again, thanks everyone for the input
