i plan on applying for an advanced position in anesthesiology. i am currently a third year FM resident. I understand that if i apply for an advnaced position that i will have a year break between actually starting anesthesia residency and completing FM. (im ok with that and will work that yr)
the question that i had is when one applies for an advanced position, dont they have to apply for a prelim as well and if they dont get a prelim position their advanced position is cancelled right? so if i rank only my advanced anesthesia positions will my rank list be valid without applying/ranking any prelim?

sorry i know its a silly question, i am trying to remember this whole process again that i went through 3 yrs ago

In a perfect world, you would have done this last year so that you could go straight from FM --> Gas. But that didn't happen and no use crying over spilt D5-1/2NS.

To answer your question, you don't need a prelim position (you've done 3 prelims in a row). The only reason an advanced match would be cancelled would be if you hadn't completed the appropriate prerequisites prior to starting, which is not an issue for you.

Also, moving to ERAS where it belongs.

You can apply to R0 positions, which you will start as a CA-1 in July immediately after the match.

This is the best advice on here. You may not actually have to work for a year.

Where did you get the crazy idea that an advanced position match would be canceled based on whether you apply/match prelim???? You just have to finish a prelim before you start CA-1. You've clearly done a few prelims so you are fine.
