I recently got accepted to a dental school and will start as D1 in Aug. I started to look into HSPS and have many questions.

- I think it might be too late to apply for 4yrs, so when do I start applying for 3yr program.

- I have US permanent residency (green card) not a US citizen. Am I still eligible?

- I have a arrest record for knowingly receiving stolen item( a lap top from a acquaintance) and originally was charged with 3rd degree felony, but was downgraded to city ordinance("equivalent to parking ticket" -my lawyer), and do not have a criminal record. The arrest record can be expunged but haven't followed through with it yet. Is it going to be a problem?

- what are the qualifications. high GPA? DAT? interview? I have no idea what the process is.

-where do i begin? currently, I live in NJ, but will be moving down to florida in July to attend dental school there. Should i contact a local recruiter and start the process or do i contact someone near the school I will be attending?

- I don't have preference to any branch. is some of the branches considered easier to get in? what are some pros and cons of each branches?

I know these are a lot of questions, but any answer to one of these questions will be very appreciated!!

i am on a 4yr hpsp scholarship..i could explain the process to you, but i won't bc you're not eligible. Actually im looking at the brochure right now and the first bullet says:

"Be a U.S. citizen (must not hold dual citizenship)"

* Start immediately, there is always a chance that you can get a four year off the OML

* You must be a citizen - no getting around it

* Anything can be waived as long as you are honest from the beginning

3.2 GPA 19 DAT for Army

* Citizenship is your starting point

*No

I'm acutally answering your questions for others to read. You are not eligible and probably won't be in the next year, however, there are others who may see this.

Thank you so much for the reply.
Now I have more questions 😳
I obtained my green card in 2008, and might be able to obtain citizenship in October this year. Is it possible to get started on at least some of the paper works, and submit my application as soon as I get my citizenship?

Is 3yr scholarship only offered to people who actually applied for 4yr and didnt get it?
or can I still apply for 3yr program after I get my citizenship

Also, is 3.2 a cutoff or average stat?
My undergrad gpa was 2.99, but I have masters in biomedical sciences with 3.85gpa 23AA 25TS DAT. Would you say it is possible with my stat?

Thanks in advance!

With a green card you can join the Reserves, but they do not offer dental school scholarships. They will take you after you graduate as a dentist and you can do loan repayment.

The application packet will not go through without your citizenship. I can not speak to whether a recruiter will want to take the time to put it together and then sit on it waiting for your citizenship - it will be their call. You may contact them when you get down to Florida and ask.

The 3 yr scholarships will begin to be given out after 1 October. New applicants can apply after that, but unless it is close to that time, people on the OML will have the scholarship offered to them first.
