applying for match in 2005, when to take step 1

Hi i am an IMG studying in Ireland and wanted to apply for the Match in 2005. I was wondering what is the latest one can take the Step 1 during the year and still be able to apply for the match. for example if i were to take step 1 in May of 2005 and wanted to apply for the match that same summer would my results be back by then? and along the same line, what is the latest date you have to take step 2?

Usually it takes 4-8 weeks to get your scores back.

Some programs will require you to take Step 3 in addition to Steps 1 & 2. If you haven't taken these yet, I think it is too late to apply for the 2005 match...Also, ERAS deadlines are generally in december/january for submitting your application so taking step 1 in May 2005 would be too late (and you would still need to take step 2, at the least) and you wouldn't be able to apply for residencies through ERAS in the summer...

If you can take your exams in time, you should be able to apply for the 2006 match.

thanks bigfrank. I know the match application process starts every summer, but when exactly is the first day that students can turn in their application?

Applying for the match is simple, and closes on Dec 1 the year prior to the match (i.e. for people doing the 2005 NRMP match, that would be Dec 1, 2004) unless they want to pay additional fees. Can't remember when it opens, but Aug 15 sounds about right.

I assume by your email and the fact that you have not taken step 1 yet that you are actually looking to register for the 2006 match? (the 2005 match is on March 17, 2005 and you would need to be registered with ERAS and actively applying to programs NOW in order to get interviews---and now is very very late to be just starting that process...and you would need step 1 scores too).

ERAS, the other program you'd need to use to apply in the match, opens in the summer (July, I believe) and applications to programs cannot be submitted until Sept 1. I don't know when ERAS closes but I believe it is after the match is complete.

If I were you, I'd find an adviser at your institution and ask about the match process to find out exactly what you need to do....being an IMG will make it a little tougher during the process, and there are likely extra "hoops" to go through that I am unaware of.

Thanks Smurfette. You are right, I intend to apply for the 2006 MAtch (oops) and i wanted to find out if it would be too late to take the step 1 around may of 2005, for example. As far as finding an advisor as an IMG, we are not fortunate enough to have anyone at our school giving us any advice or direction. that is why i have to resort to this great site. Unfortunately, many IMG's have to go through the process on their own. In any case, I guess as long as the Step 1 scores are back within 4-8weeks then i guess i could take the exam in May 2005 and still be able to apply that summer for the 2006 Match, right? and then take step 2 by december 2005.
