Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of applying for PM&R at LongIsland/NYC hospitals...But I'm wondering if I have to apply for PGY-2 position now along with my internship. What's the advantage of applying for both now as opposed to doing my internship starting in 2005 and applying for PGY-2 for PM&R then?

My reason for asking is that starting in 2006, Long Beach Medical Center will be starting an osteopathic PM&R residency but I won't be able to apply til nextfall. If I apply now for PM&R I will have to go wherever i match and I won't be able to apply toLongBeach. But will I be at a disadvantage at all the other programs if I wait til next fall to apply for a spot in 2006?

Let me know what you think!

Thanks.

most specialties that start at PGY-2 including PMR usually want you to apply at the same time you apply for your internship. typically residency programs will accept candidates for PGY-2 positions 1 year ahead of start time. in your specific case, most (if not all) PMR residency programs will have decided on Feb/March 2005 who will be in their program to start July 2006. of course you don't have to apply at the same time as you apply for internship but you will be at a disadvantage when you apply Fall 2005 for a July 2006 position as most programs will have filled for 2006 already. You could only hope that someone decides to drop their acceptance to a residency program to open a spot for you to apply for.
If I were you I would go ahead and go through the NRMP (natl residency match) and get your internship and PGY-2 lined up. That's because I don't like taking risks and waiting til fall 2005 to find a good 2006 PMR program is very difficult. Regarding the Long Beach PMR program that starts in 2006... new programs will always have their faults, hurdles, problems, and though someone has to be the guinea pig, it sometimes is best that the guinea pig is not you
